The Spencers: Luke and Laura

  • Laura runs into Mac at Kelly's. He's convinced that Luke and Felicia will pick up where they left off when they both get home. (5/2)
  • On the same day Felicia talks with Bobbie about getting her family back, Laura tells Bobbie that she and Luke grew closer while they were searching for Lucky. She says that all she wants is to be able to tell her son that she loves him. (5/4)
  • Luke returns home, but he has no information about Lucky. He now thinks that they should wait for him to come home instead of searching for him. (5/5)
  • They agree to call off their search, not realizing that Lucky was again visiting Lulu. But Luke reassures Laura that he will do everything to get their son back. Laura also mentions Roy's latest predicament, so Luke goes to Sonny. He storms into the penthouse and is stunned to find Carly there. Meanwhile, Laura visits with Nikolas. (5/8)
  • After hearing the update from Sonny and Carly (during which Carly gives away more information than Sonny wants, by way of snarking at Luke), Luke goes to his office. Felicia comes to him there after another fight with Mac. They almost have sex on his desk, but Felicia stops it and runs out into the club, half dressed, where Mac and Laura are just about to leave. Laura has been talking with Mike and Tammy about Lucky, and with Mac about the new possible charges against Stefan for the murder of the doctor who treated Lucky. (5/9)
  • Alexis visits Luke at the club. She won't give him any details about Roy, but tells him to talk to Bobbie. She then makes sure that he doesn't blame her for Helena's actions. Luke goes to the brownstone, where Bobbie's finally home and talking to Felicia. Bobbie cautions him where she's concerned, and then gives him the update on Roy. He's not happy to hear of her involvement, and asks for a meeting with Roy. (5/10)
  • Meanwhile, Laura sees Stefan, who gives her photos of Lucky in Port Charles and insists that Lucky will exonerate him. Later, Laura goes to Luke's office to tell him the news and finds Felicia there. They fight about Felicia's refusal to end her relationship with Luke, and Laura says that she wants her family back. (5/10)
  • Luke goes to Roy with a few choice words, warning him not to hurt Bobbie. He also tells him not to trust Sonny. When Bobbie phones, he warns her again to get out of it. Later, Helena tries to convince him that she did not kidnap Lucky. (5/11)
  • Luke goes to the hospital to warn Bobbie away from Roy again, and has a brief encounter with his favorite niece. Later, Mike tells Luke that Lucky's in Port Charles, and Luke heads off to confront him. (5/12)
  • Laura tells Elizabeth that Lucky is back in town and finds out that Elizabeth already knows, while Luke argues with his son. Lucky makes it clear that he wants nothing to do with his parents, and Luke and Laura (who arrived in the middle of Luke and Lucky's fight) are left frustrated and confused after he leaves. (5/15)
  • Luke and Laura try to reason out the cause of Lucky's behavior. (5/17)
  • When Luke runs into Felicia and her girls in the park, Maxie grows agitated. (5/19)
  • While Luke asks Felicia to make a choice, Mac tells Laura that loving Luke will only bring her pain. Later, Luke talks to Tammy while Laura has a confrontation with Stefan. (5/22)
  • Luke tells Laura that, unlike her, he does not believe that they can ever get their family back. She goes to Jake's to get drunk and winds up flirting with a guy she meets there. When Jake calls Luke to come and check in on her, Luke first tells her that Laura can take care of herself, but then shows up. He sees that Mac has arrived before him, and leaves without making himself known. (5/25)
  • Lucky runs into Felicia, who tries to defend Luke. Luke comes upon them and gets angry with Felicia. Lucky, in turn, gets angry with Luke. Later, Laura runs into Felicia and Luke and gets angry with the both of them. (5/26)
  • Luke sees Sonny on the docks, and they talk about losing sons. Later, Laura runs into Lucky, and he thinks that it's another set-up. Then he meets up with Luke as well. (5/29)

I. Tell Me What You Want, What You Really, Really Want (5/4)

Laura: "I just wish that I could reassure him somehow. He's got to be so confused. I have never seen my son hit his own father. And I keep asking myself why."

Laura: "She's sticking to her story--that she rescued Lucky from Faison and then she moved him around because she wasn't sure whether or not Faison was dead. And when Lucky asked to leave her, she let him go."
Bobbie: "Oh, please. Nobody believes that."
Laura: "Yeah, but nobody can prove otherwise, either. What if he is running away from Helena, you know? He was held captive for a year, and Luke and I didn't come to rescue him. What if he doesn't trust us?"

Bobbie: "So--Luke knows Lucky better than anyone. He'll find him. He'll bring him home."
Laura: "That's all I want--the chance to tell my son that I love him."

Bobbie's line that Luke knows Lucky better than anyone made me do a double take. Luke knows Lucky better than Laura does? Perhaps Laura would agree. Better than Elizabeth? I don't know if Elizabeth would like that suggestion, since Nikolas has been insisting to her that she knows Lucky best. It's not a competition, but Elizabeth's keeping Lucky a secret from Laura almost felt like her trying to win the "I know Lucky Best" sweepstakes.

II. Luke Comes Home (5/5, 5/8)

Luke comes in slowly, looking beat. He removes his leather jacket and sits. The first words we hear from him are, appropriately:

Luke: "Oh, go away."
Laura: "I knew you'd stop here first."
Luke: "I'm sorry, darling. I ran out of places to look. I didn't find our boy."

Luke: "Ok. Well, I'm thinking now that maybe we're on the wrong track."
Laura: "What do you mean?"
Luke: "Well, instead of us running all over the globe searching for him, maybe we should just stand still and let him find us."

He's got a new haircut, and he gives Laura a big hug when they meet. Neither of them cries, however. The initial shock has worn off, perhaps, and they're just tired. Still determined, just trying a different approach.

Meanwhile, I still think it was really bad timing that took L&L out of town for weeks while we got acclimated to the new Lucky. Their schedules were very busy for several weeks during the search, and the writing handled the reason for their departure very well, but it was rather a hole in Lucky's return, delayed until now.

On the next episode:

Laura goes to the window at one point, briefly--the same window out which Luke looked several times after Lucky's presumed death. Luke goes to sit down.

Laura: "Do you believe that Lucky's on his way home?"
Luke: "Oh, no, I--that was a bad choice of words. It's just too many miles, you know? Too--too much bad news. No, it--it's just that if I knew anything at all, I would tell you. You know that."
Laura: "So you're just guessing, then, that he's on his way home. It's not like somebody saw him--"
Luke: "No, nobody's seen him, darling. We taught him to cover his tracks too well."
Laura: "No sign?"
Luke: "No, not--I talked to about 50 people in 16 different cities. Nothing."
Laura: "So when you say that we should let him come to us--"
Luke: "Well, again, that's just I'm tired. That's a bad choice of words. What I mean is if you do the legwork and it doesn't pay off, then you got to change your strategy. And I don't know--maybe we're supposed to give the kid room."
Laura: "But I talked to Elizabeth, and she hasn't heard from him."
Luke: "But she will. I'm sure she will--if we give it time."

Laura: "He's afraid of something. I don't know if it's Stefan or Helena. I don't know, but--but how can he come out of hiding when they're still out there somewhere?"

Laura has successfully lumped Stefan back in with the Cassadines. Like Terry, I hope that it's not that easy. For me, it's clear that Stefan is still dealing with Laura's turning on him, but Laura is too focused on Luke and Lucky to really deal with what's happened between her and Stefan. At some point, however, I want her to have to think about it.

Luke: "Remember that sweet little girl in the diner that was a waitress--"
Laura: "Katie."
Luke: "Katie. Katie said that Cowboy came into the diner with Helena. They were not unfriendly. They left together, and then he came back. Now, does that sound like somebody who is on the run?"
Laura: "No."
Luke: "No. Helena let him go. And Katie also said, he said he was waiting 'for his parents.'"
Laura: "Why?"
Luke: "Yeah, why? I mean, just to rearrange my face and then run off and break your heart?"
Laura: "You think this is about us?"
Luke: "Well, I'm not sure, but, I mean, if the kid is on some kind of mission--you know, righting wrongs like last time--"
Laura: "Mm-hmm?"
Luke: "Well, the only place he can do that is here."
Laura: "You're right. Well, let him come home. I can take anything he wants to dish out. But what if he--what if he was only in the diner to cut ties with us and now he's halfway around the world somewhere, starting over without us?"
Luke: "Darling, let's don't jump to that conclusion yet. Let's just give it a little time. If he doesn't show up, if he doesn't call, if he makes no attempt at all, then I'll go back out and I'll look again. I'll look in the unusual places. I only looked in the usual. Just give it some time. And then you say the word and I'll go."
Laura: "Thank you, Luke."

The "thank you" was for a hug. As she turns back to the window, Luke comes behind her, placing his hands on her arms. She leans back and he kisses the back of her head.

He turns back to his desk at his own joke in the following scene:

Laura: "If you love something, let it go. If it doesn't come back--"
Luke: "Chase it down and beat it with a brick."
Laura: "That's your version of it. Oh, I remember that poster that you had of that in the back room at the disco."
Luke: "So, do you agree with me?"
Laura: "That we should let Lucky come to us? Yes, I think you're right."
Luke: "Which is not to say that we do nothing. As soon as Helena comes up for air, we'll start working on her."

Luke: "Did Roy take her fishing?"
Laura: "You don't know? Roy's gone."
Luke: "Gone? Where?"
Laura: "He was arrested and taken back to Pentonville."
Luke: "What?"
Laura: "I'm sorry. I thought you knew."
Luke: "Oh, thank you, Sonny Corinthos. Who's his lawyer?"
Laura: "I don't know. But I think he's doing all right without one. I heard that he escaped."
Luke: "You got to admire the man's style."

Laura still speaks through the kids: "Lulu misses you." But she gives a little smile at Luke's crack about Roy's style.

Laura: "Apparently he was being moved from one prison to the other, there was an accident, and he disappeared."
Luke: "Do you know if Bobbie's heard from him?"
Laura: "I had police in the house asking questions. I didn't want to know."
Luke: "Smart woman."
Laura: "Trained by the best."

Luke: "Tell Princess I'll come and see her tomorrow."
Laura: "Ok. She'll be sitting on the front porch with her fishing pole."

Laura looks away, then moves away on Luke's line about Lucky's training. I wonder if she still regrets the way they had to bring him up, that they trained him so well to leave them and go out on his own. She's expressed that regret once or twice, I think. They leave together.

III. Laura Finds Comfort In Her Other Children (5/8)

Laura: "Oh, honey. Guess who I just saw? Your daddy. He came home."
Lesley Lu: "Everybody came home."

Laura: "I was looking at that earlier day, trying to figure out where we went wrong. Lucky was such a beautiful baby, wasn't he? Look at him with the chocolate all over his face."
Nikolas: "You didn't do anything wrong."
Laura: "He hit his father and he ran away from us. There must be some reason for that."
Nikolas: "Helena. She kidnapped him and locked him up. You've been through it."
Laura: "He could be anywhere out there. I just--I just want to know that he's safe."
Nikolas: "He's safe. He's safe. If he could survive Helena, he's pretty good to get through almost anything. I'm just sure he's taking some time."
Laura: "That's what Luke thinks, too. So I guess we just stay put and wait for Lucky to come to us."
Nikolas: "He will."
Laura: "Thank you. You're a good brother and a wonderful son. You know, I think I should probably call Elizabeth and let her know what happened with Luke."
Nikolas: "I'll tell her."
Laura: "Ok. It's got to be pretty hard for her, all the waiting. She loves Lucky so much."
Nikolas: "She's fine. She'll be ok."

Lulu runs to Laura, then Nikolas picks her up and carries her. I think I caught Laura stealing a glance at the mantel, where we know there are family pictures. For just a second as they talk, Laura looks like she suspects that he knows more than he's saying, but she doesn't say anything.
