Jax and Chloe (cont.):

IV. Chloe Gets Motivated (5/8)

Helena: "It's not going to work. It's not going to work."

Jax: "You having another dream?"
Chloe: "Jax--it's not going to work."

Chloe: "So, I was sitting on the docks crying, and I--I could see myself somehow. I was watching myself from the stairs or something. And then I heard the music. And then I started to try to find it. And then I saw the music box."

Chloe: "'It's not going to work.' That's what she said."
Jax: "Said who?"
Chloe: "Helena. And she was laughing at me like she pitied me and--'it's not going to work.'"

Jax: "Chloe--Chloe, you're not going to go blind, ok? It was just a dream. But now you're awake and you can see me, ok? Just relax. The dream probably had something to do with the accident. You saw Helena today, and it reminded you that it didn't work. She hit you with her car and it didn't work because you're here. You're here, and you're as good as new."
Chloe: "I wish."

Chloe: "It's here, haunting me, refusing to go away, giving me headaches."
Jax: "The music box?"
Chloe: "No, this disease, this condition, whatever you want to call it. The music box is just a symbol, Jax."
Jax: "Yeah, but the way you describe it, I mean--it plays 'Sleeping Beauty,' a song you didn't recognize. It's in the jungle, where you've never been. Has a personality all its own."
Chloe: "Yeah, it is stubborn and hateful. Why did this have to happen, Jax? Why won't it go away? Why--why can't we get rid of this thing? It's not malignant. I don't understand why we can't stop it!"
Jax: "We can, Chloe, and we will. Just do me a favor."
Chloe: "What?"
Jax: "Stay angry like that."

Jax: "Ok, so why not do both? As long as it doesn't interfere with the radiation."
Chloe: "I'll ask Tony if it's ok."
Jax: "And I'll see if I can maneuver a place for you in the trials. That's not pushing it, is it?"
Chloe: "No, no. No, you're wonderful. But saving me is not your responsibility. That's Tony's job. I just need you to love me no matter what."

Chloe: "That felt good."
Jax: "Well, it should. You're in charge. It's your body. And she keeps smiling at me."
Chloe: "That's because she finds you very sexy when you're all motivational."
Jax: "You're extremely good motivation."

Chloe: "I want you to promise me that you will tell me if it becomes too much, me leaning on you. No, seriously. Because then I won't be afraid to if I know you're going to tell me when to stop."
Jax: "Look, Chloe, I'm no boy scout, ok? I'm your lover. I need you. I want you. But, ok, if I get burned out, I'll take a couple of hours for myself. But there is no way I'm walking away from this. Not now, not ever."

Jax: "Yeah, it's Jax. Listen, I'm ready to make my move on Helena."

V. Jax Puts the Pieces in Place (5/10, 5/11)

Jax comes through the door, not through the secret passage that Jerry used when he met with Stefan.

Stefan: "Mr. Jacks. I see you've finally given some thought to my proposal?"
Jax: "Well, I'm willing to do whatever it takes to keep Helena away from Chloe. Even throw in with you."

Jax: "Helena's untouchable because of her bottomless bank account. Take away the money, you take away the power."
Stefan: "Oh, I've already taken away a good deal of the money. Mr. Jacks, perhaps you'd like to consider helping me neutralize Helena in some other way."

Stefan: "But eliminating Helena will take more than a corporate raid of her financial base. All you'll do is make her think you want to play with her. Extreme measures, Mr. Jacks. Extreme measures will be required to stop my mother's reign of terror. Now, if and when you're ready, you let me know. We'll discuss the next step."
Jax: "Thanks for your time."

I enjoyed this mix of characters, and still wish for more of Jax with anybody else but the person he's currently in love with. But whenever he's matched romantically, we see almost nothing of him with anybody else. Business, especially, goes right out the window. Witness the lame storyline with Edward and ELQ as well as this meeting with Stefan coming to nothing.

On the Next Day:

Helena: "I'm here about my son. I know that you two have been putting your heads together, presumably about me."
Jax: "Well, if your spies were worth their salary, then you'd know for sure, wouldn't you?"

Jax: "Really? You'd accept a glass of wine from me? How do you know I wouldn't lace it with something?"
Helena: "Too old-fashioned for jasper jacks. No, you're more the skiing accident in the alps type."
Jax: "Don't give me any ideas, Helena. You hurt the woman I love. Why shouldn't I make you pay?"

Helena: "You don't even know why I'm here."
Jax: "I said get out. Now."
Helena: "Well, very well. If you insist. However, I make a much better friend than I do an enemy. You would do well to remember that. You really are delicious."

Jax: "Hey. Well, you told me to go home, but you didn't say anything about coming back. How did it go?"
Chloe: "Piece of cake."

Chloe: "Why did I just think you were sitting over there?"
Jax: "I haven't moved."
Chloe: "You were looking right at me, like you were angry, almost like you hated me."
Jax: "Sweetie. It was just a dream."

Jax and Chloe were in matching greys now. We begin the dreaming with an extreme close-up of Chloe's eye. She sees Jax move around the room, angry, and we realize that she's dreaming his fight with Helena from Helena's viewpoint.

Judy: "Ah, May sweeps. What the writers should've done (rather than spin their wheels through April, waiting for sweeps) was try to time their stories, building suspense so that one or more would be reaching a pinnacle in May. But the drama's been so flat for so long, that the only thing "peaking" in sweeps is my disinterest."

"The possible exception to this is that the reveal of the meaning of Chloe's dreams is out there, but again, the timing's been off. They should've been building some Cassadine family background story at the same time (since this obviously involves them), instead of highlighting just Chloe and essentially backburnering Stefan, Helena, and Alexis. The more characters you pull into a story, the more likely it is to garner interest amongst a wide variety of viewers; but I guess "variety" is not something that the writers are striving for these days, given the horribly repetitive dialogue and scenes of late."

VI. I Love the Smell of Protein Shake in the Morning (5/16)

Chloe: "I don't know that I can do radiation and a protein drink in the same morning."
Jax: "Even with chocolate chip pancakes as a chaser?"
Chloe: "Ooh, I can be bribed."

And she actually drank it! Have we ever seen anybody actually drink one of Jax's shakes, other than Jax?

Chloe: "It's not that I don't want you with me, Jax."
Jax: "I know."
Chloe: "No, it's just Alexis called and offered and--"
Jax: "Chloe, you don't need to explain yourself, ok? We said that we would do this your way, so we'll do it your way."

Jax: "I know she's in good hands, so--"
Alexis: "I'm not going to let her get into any trouble. Go do something."

Ned: "Chloe is there, and you are here?"
Jax: "Yeah, it wasn't my idea. She wanted Alexis. Yeah, I don't know why she can't understand that I need to be with her."

Ned: "I wish there was more I could do to help."
Jax: "There is, actually. Yeah. You could sell me your E.L.Q. stock."

Chloe: "Thanks, Tony. You don't have to stay."
Alexis: "And you don't have to be so noble."

Chloe: "And for the first time, I'm actually starting to feel hopeful."
Alexis: "That's great."
Chloe: "Yeah. It's our secret for now, ok?"
Alexis: "You got it."
Helena: "Well, I hope I'm not interrupting. I've been meaning to call you all morning, and here you are. It's such a small world."

Jax: "Oh, please. Spare me any theories you have about how I'm going after E.L.Q. to overcompensate for Chloe's illness, ok? You going to sell me your stock or not?"
Ned: "I thought I made that clear. I'm not."

Ned: "I guess Chloe doesn't know that you're systematically raiding the family stockholders."
Jax: "Ned, Chloe doesn't get involved in my business decisions, ok?"
Ned: "The players at E.L.Q. are her family. That puts her right in the middle of this battle. So if you're really concerned about her welfare, I would worry about that. Otherwise, you may come out of this losing in more ways than one."

Helena: "Oh, I'd like to help."
Chloe: "Leave me alone."

Chloe: "Where did you get that information?"
Alexis: "Medical records, which are privileged."
Helena: "Always the attorney, aren't you, Natasha?"
Alexis: "You want to sue her for invasion of privacy? I'd love to represent you."
Helena: "Oh, why must you persist in making me the enemy?"
Chloe: "What would you call someone who threatens your life and runs you down with her car?"
Helena: "Well, you could be judging me unfairly, you know."

Jax: "Was it a rough treatment?"
Alexis: "She's in better shape than you are."
Jax: "Why can't I ever get a straight answer around here?"

Jax: "I'm sorry. I just can't help worrying about her."
Alexis: "Obsessing is more like it."

Alexis: "You know, the best thing you did for her just now was that when she walked through that door, you were not in there pacing back and forth."
Jax: "You know, Alexis, sometimes I catch her watching me like she's memorizing everything I do because one day she might not be able to see anymore. And then I get this knot in my stomach; I walk around with it all day. I don't know. I got to do something."
Alexis: "You do what you did in St. Petersburg. Chloe said that you were right there living in the moment. You surprised her; you made her laugh. That's the best medicine that she can have right now, and you're the only one that can do that for her. You let Tony handle the treatments, and Ned and I will take her--will take her to all of her appointments. You just love her in a way that lifts her spirits and keeps her dreaming about the future. Ok?"
Jax: "Ok, I'll try."
Alexis: "Good. I love you."
Jax: "Love you, too."

Chloe: "Yeah. She knew every detail of my medical condition and my treatment."
Jax: "I can have her thrown in jail for that, you know."
Chloe: "Hey."
Jax: "What?"
Chloe: "Not tonight, ok?"
Jax: "Oh, no, of course--no, no, not tonight. We'll let Helena wait. Tonight is ours."

Jax has changed out of workout togs and has a single rose ready for Chloe when she wakes. It matches the one red flower on her sweater, which distracts me. And of course, I get a case of the giggles when he lights the obligatory candles.
