Jax and Chloe:

  • When Jax wakes Chloe from a dream about the music box, he makes her feel better by focusing on finding the real thing. She decides that it must be in Port Charles, and they head for home. (5/1)
  • Chloe phones Elizabeth and says she'll stay home from work for the day. Edward stops by for a visit while Jax is out and plays up Chloe's attachment to the Quartermaine family. She asks Jax to end his attempt on ELQ. Later, she has another nightmare, this time of a dead man. (5/3)
  • Chloe goes to her appointment with Tony without Jax. He tells her that the second medication isn't working, and they discuss their options. Out on the docks, Chloe has an unpleasant meeting with Helena, but Jax intervenes. Chloe gives him the news, and they talk about experimental and alternative treatments. (5/5)
  • After another nightmare, Chloe gets angry. She and Jax discuss what the music box and the dream might mean, and Chloe tells him how irritating her encounter with Helena was. Jax proposes positive steps--an experimental medication along with her radiation--and Chloe feels better after leaving a message for Tony about it. Jax promises her that they will win. But she cautions him to let her know when her dependence on him becomes too much. He promises that he will take some time for himself, but that he will never leave her. Later, when she's out of the room, he makes a call about the attack he's planning against Helena. (5/8)
  • Jax agrees to work with Stefan to take down Helena. Later, Jax reassures AJ that the deal will go down, and AJ signs over his stocks. Jax prepares to strike ELQ despite Edward's request for a compromise. (5/10)
  • Chloe starts radiation. Later, she doesn't realize that she's dreaming an actual meeting between Helena and Jax that took place earlier. Helena had stopped in to chat with Jax about his meeting with Stefan. (5/11)
  • Chloe goes to her doctor's appointment without Jax, which he doesn't like. He offers to buy Ned's shares of ELQ, but Ned won't sell. Ned warns Jax not to lose Chloe by going after ELQ. When Helena offers help to Chloe, Alexis gets worried. She takes Chloe home and reassures Jax, and then she goes to Stefan and asks him to leave Jax and Chloe out of his war against Helena. (5/16)
  • Stefan questions Chloe about the night of the accident, hoping that she'll remember. Jax drives him away, but Chloe insists that she wants to remember so that Helena will be stopped. (5/17)
  • Chloe sees Felicia in the park and lends a sympathetic ear. Later, she has a dream about Stefan, and Jax helps her forget about it. (5/18)
  • Jax and Chloe enjoy some time together until she suffers another bad headache. They go to the hospital and Tony says she's fine. While there, they see Sonny and learn the news about Carly and the baby. (5/23)
  • Tony tells Jax and Chloe that the radiation isn't working completely. Jax gets some news about an experimental drug that promises to do the trick. Meanwhile, they get to the concert just in time to appreciate Eddie Maine's return performance. (5/25)
  • Chloe overhears Edward trying to get Jax to stop his move on ELQ for Sonny's sake. But she asks Jax to hold off, and Jax refuses. Later, Jax learns that Chloe's been denied the new medication that could help her. (5/26)
  • Chloe and Jax fight again about what her illness is doing to him and about ELQ. When Helena arrives, Chloe leaves, and Jax throws Helena out without hearing what she has to say. Later, Chloe dreams of their encounter, and sees Jax threatening her. (5/29)
  • Jax decides to buy the pharmaceutical company that's making the drug Chloe needs, so he asks Edward to postpone the board meeting because he needs the capital for Chloe. Edward's delighted, but when Chloe overhears him plotting against Jax, she lambastes him for his manipulation of the situation. Meanwhile, Jax gets bad news about the drug company. Later, Chloe apologizes to Jax for doubting him. (5/30)
  • Chloe lends an ear to Felicia about her trouble at home and her feelings for Luke, advising Felicia on how she felt when her own parents broke up. Later, she spends some time with Ned. (5/31)

I. There's No Place Like Home (5/1)

Jax: "So why were you saying 'come back'?"
Chloe: "Because I wanted the music box."
Jax: "Why?"
Chloe: "I'm not sure."

Jax: "What happened to Sleeping Beauty?"
Chloe: "She fell asleep for 100 years and her whole world went dark."
Jax: "That's right."
Chloe: "And then her prince appeared and saved her."
Jax: "So perhaps the dream is about being afraid."
Chloe: "Of my world going dark?"
Jax: "Exactly."
Chloe: "But it was different. It's just--anyway, I have my prince."
Jax: "Right. Close enough, anyway."

Chloe: "You have given me a fairy tale trip to Russia. And I will always treasure it. But, Jax, my dreams aren't fairy tales. I wish they were. Maybe I need to listen to what they're really trying to tell me. And maybe whatever I've been looking for has been in Port Charles all along."

II. Get Her Where She Lives, Edward (5/3)

I immediately notice that Chloe is actually wearing jeans. Good for her!

Edward: "I don't want to spoil your first day back, but I think you need to know that Jax is buying up E.L.Q. stock left and right. And that could only signify one thing--he's going to try to take over the family company, hmm?"
Chloe: "You're right, Edward."

Edward: "I am really disappointed in you, young lady. You knew all about this, and you didn't even warn me?"
Chloe: "I wanted to tell you, Edward, but Jax tells me that this is just business and that you would do the same thing."

Edward: "And I have made mistakes. Horrible ones. But every one of them has been out of love for this family--Jason and my great-grandson Michael. Even A.J. They were all sacrificed. And now I know that Ned should have been running E.L.Q. all along, and I've alienated him. So all this has made E.L.Q. very vulnerable. And, ruthless raider that he is, Jax has taken advantage. Now, I would never impose on you otherwise, but this family is in peril. We need you, Chloe."

Chloe: "And this is who he is. This is what he does. And as much as I do not want to see you hurt, I don't really feel it's fair for me to get in the middle."
Edward: "Well, is it fair for this family to have to surrender everything, especially to someone who is only interested in winning or losing and who seems to have no regard at all for certain unwritten rules of the game? Chloe, you're one of us. We need your help."

Edward: "Did you think I wouldn't notice that you were buying Tracy's and A.J.'s stocks?"
Jax: "No, I had no doubt that you would find out. But harassing Chloe, trying to force her to choose sides? You know, I just figured that you would have a little more class than that."
Edward: "Has nothing to do with class. Chloe's family."

Edward: "I'm wasting my time here. It's very clear that I will have to defend E.L.Q. by any means necessary. But don't say I didn't warn you."
Jax: "I'll look forward to it. Just don't involve Chloe."
Edward: "Too late. You involved her when you decided to steal her family's company."

Chloe: "Emotional blackmail. Unfortunately, it worked. Jax, please, don't go after E.L.Q."

Chloe: "The Quartermaines are my family. E.L.Q. means everything to them."
Jax: "And they mean everything to you?"

Chloe: "Is it pride?"
Jax: "Principal."
Chloe: "Same difference."
Jax: "Not that kind. I mean capital."

Jax: "Once I start something, I finish it."
Chloe: "And finish my family in the process."
Jax: "I hardly think so."

Chloe: "It's not an eye for an eye with you, Jax. You are going after his whole heart. It's not fair. And don't tell me it's about business because you know it's not. So will you tell me, why are you doing this? The truth."
Jax: "I can't believe this. You're letting Edward manipulate you? Look, Chloe, I know you're fond of the Quartermaines, but you're not that close to them--not closer than you are to me."
Chloe: "Now who's manipulating me?"
Jax: "Look, I'm sorry, but you only met them face to face a year ago--less than a year ago. Why is this so important to you?"
Chloe: "When I was a little girl, Aunt Eleanor used to read me Edward and Lila's love letters. I remember holding those crinkled, yellowed pieces of paper in my hands and feeling swept away by the force of their love. When my father left, those letters were my only proof that love didn't have to end. I know it may sound ridiculous, but I've held on to that hope. And Edward and Lila have become a part of my heart. I just--I can't stand to think of them losing their company in their golden years, after they're prepared for this for so long. This is a time for them to be secure and peaceful and not to be fighting for their company."

Chloe: "It's just when you talk like that, you sound like my father--cold, unfeeling, everything's black and white, cut-and-dried. It doesn't matter that we're destroying people's lives because that's the price we pay for business, right?"
Jax: "Ok, now who's being unfair? Look, Chloe, I have feelings. You know that. I have feelings for you. But I keep them separate from my work, and you need to understand that."
Chloe: "I'm sorry. I can't compartmentalize my feelings that way. They don't just turn on and off."

Chloe: "Jax, there was a man, and I think he was dead. Why is this happening to me?"
Jax: "I don't know. But I swear to you, we'll find out."

Amy: "When they first showed the walls of the office, I said out loud, 'Why is Chloe dreaming about ELQ?' That looked exactly like the ELQ office set, not even re-dressed, but we haven't seen it on screen for a while. So are they using it as ELQ? It doesn't look like the office where Helena met the doctor. If Chloe's dreaming of the dead doc at the ELQ offices, is she blurring her worries about Edward and Lila with her music-box-of-Helena's dreams? Or are ELQ and the Qs somehow going to be connected to the fallout? I'm betting we weren't supposed to recognize it."

III. Helena Makes a Show of Sympathy (5/5)

Something Tony said made me wonder: didn't he say earlier that the tumor was operable and that she could have the surgery any time she wanted? Now it's too risky? I've given up following the descriptions of her condition. But she only let herself cry once the doors on the elevator closed.

Chloe plucked a flower out of the planter and sat on a bench on the docks. We cut to a point-of-view shot from somebody who was watching her from behind the corner. We cut back to her face and the sound of footsteps approaching. Helena was in dark grey with white pearls; Chloe was in white.

Helena: "I'm merely offering simple human compassion."
Chloe: "Either you walk away right now, or I will call the police."
Helena: "And tell them what, that I saw you crying and expressed sympathy?"

Jax: "You know, you're really starting to make a nuisance of yourself. And that's just unacceptable."

Jax: "Do you really want more trouble? Because I would love to give it to you."
Helena: "Oh, I so enjoy being threatened by a powerful man. What is it you would do to me?"
Jax: "Well, prison comes to mind."
Helena: "There are all kinds of prisons, Mr. Jacks."

Helena's acknowledgement of her turn on cracked me up. Perhaps it also explains her attraction for Luke? *G* I wondered if she was referring to Chloe as a prison for Jax, or some other prison Chloe was, had been, or would be trapped in. Meanwhile, we cut back and forth between Jax and Helena, visually taking Chloe out of the scene during their exchange.

Jax: "You know, Helena, you're nothing without your fortune. And as it happens, my specialty is making fortunes disappear."

Jax: "Dream your dreams, Helena. But don't be a fool and try to think you can take on Luke Spencer, Stefan, and me at the same time."
Helena: "Oh, I do wish you didn't have this hostile attitude. Someday I hope you'll see you how you've misjudged me. We might even become friends."

After they left, Helena rubbed her pearls against her chin and smiled that fabulously wicked smile.

Chloe, meanwhile, tossed her shoes and began to rant about Helena when they got back to the penthouse.

Chloe: "I just wish I could remember the moment the car hit me. I keep reliving it in my nightmare, so I don't understand. I just--in all honesty, I cannot see Helena's face. And if I could, I would tell the police and they would arrest her, but I--and then she'd just buy an acquittal anyway. And all it would do is make her mad, which is obviously not a good idea."

Jax: "I thought your appointment wasn't until tomorrow."
Chloe: "Yeah, it was moved up."
Jax: "Well, why didn't you tell me?"
Chloe: "Because I wanted to hear what he had to say on my own. It's not good news, Jax."

Jax: "Do I pressure you to be brave?"
Chloe: "No, no, no, no. I pressure me."

Chloe dreams the same shot we saw earlier; she's dreaming through Helena's eyes and seeing herself sitting on the bench at the docks. Then she walks to the stairs and sees the music box on the top step, right where Helena would have walked down.
