Sonny and Carly (cont.):
V. Roy Comes Clean (4/5)
Sonny: "Glad you came by. I need you to go to Puerto Rico for me."
Roy: "You'll have to find somebody else, man."
Sonny: "I worked for frank. He was scum. You know, he had no loyalty whatsoever
to his employees, so I don't see any reason why you should have been loyal to
him. Now, I don't agree with cooperating with the feds, but I guess, you know,
you had no choice."
Roy: "I didn't."
Sonny: "Right."
Roy: "At least, that's how I felt at the time. I took what they offered. And then
they came back. And at this particular point in time, I am still a federal informant.
My current assignment is you."
Sonny: "You're working for the feds?"
Roy: "Yeah."
Sonny: "Should I assume you're wearing a wire?"
Roy: "I'm not. You're welcome to check."
Sonny: "Fill me in first. You're a federal snitch. And a damn good one because
I almost put you in a position of trust. Why confess?"
Roy: "You helped me save Bobbie's life."
Sonny: "All right, if you love Bobbie so much, why you going to risk losing
her? Because this is not going to end well for you."
Roy: "You lie much, Sonny?"
Sonny: "I used to until my wife died. My lies partly killed her. Too much weight
to carry around, you know? I didn't want to do it anymore."
Roy: "Neither do I. I spent the better part of the last two decades pretending
to be somebody else--doing time under assumed names, getting released, earning
people's trust, turning those same people over to the FBI. Most of them probably
deserved it. They were scum. Like frank. Or maybe that's just something I told
myself to keep from thinking about the fact that some of them might have been
more worthy than others, their crimes more acceptable. I wasn't going to let that
matter. I had a job to do--going to sell these losers out to buy my freedom back.
And as much as I hated it, I figured I would hate the alternative more. Until
they gave me this last assignment--come back to my town and use my name, my friends
to get evidence on you. That was a big mistake. Big mistake they made sending
me back here. They made me remember who I used to be, what it felt like to be
a guy whose word actually meant something. There are only so many compromises
you can make before there's nothing left. And snitching on you after what you
did for Bobbie would have been one compromise too many."
Sonny: "The feds sent you because of Luke?"
Roy: "Yeah. They knew you and Luke were friends. So were Luke and I. They figured
it was a slam-dunk."
Sonny: "He doesn't know anything about this?"
Roy: "He doesn't know a thing about it. He's only cooperated with law enforcement
once that I know of. He still regrets it."
Sonny: "I got to give it to the feds--they got me twice in one year. Put someone
on the inside. Ah. I never saw it coming."
Carly: "He's a fed. He is Hannah's father, and they are setting you up."
Sonny: "Carly, enough. Roy already told me he's working for the feds. Now,
the Hannah thing is new. But, you know, if you want to listen to what he's got
to say, then you got to calm down."
Roy: "Hannah's my daughter. I was about to tell you when your messenger arrived."
Carly: "Well, yeah, I'm sure you were."
Sonny: "Carly! Can I hear this?"
Sonny: "What have you given the FBI on me?"
Roy: "Nothing. You haven't put me in a position where there was evidence to get,
except for that one time when I made that payoff to the harbor master and the
cops busted me."
Sonny: "All right. I can't have you anywhere near my warehouse or any connection
with my organization. And my men are going to have to be told that you're an informant."
Roy: "Yeah, I get that."
Sonny: "What happens to you?"
Roy: "Once the bureau realizes my cover's blown, my guess is they'll send me back
to prison. And that's pretty much it."
Sonny: "Good luck."
Roy: "One thing--my daughter never betrayed you. She put her career in jeopardy
to keep the FBI away from you. I think she's better off without you, but she was
telling you the truth when she told you she stood up. I want you to know that."
Carly: "You're letting him go?"
Sonny: "As opposed to what?"
Carly: "He could be lying, Sonny. What if he's on his way right now to the FBI
to tell them whatever they need to lock you up, to put you in prison?"
Sonny: "He didn't have access to anything that could implicate me. He might have
in a couple of weeks. He threw his life away to tell the truth. I owe him for
that."
Sonny: "Would have been a lot easier if you had a car waiting."
Carly: "You know what? I saved your life here, and that's all you can say? You
just want to complain because I was running, which might possibly not have been
good for the baby."
Sonny: "I never said a word."
Carly: "No, but you don't have to because, you know, I can feel you worrying.
It's like telepathy or something."
Sonny: "First of all, you never saved my life. But you thought you did, so I appreciate
that."
Carly: "Oh, you're welcome."
Sonny: "All right. Second of all, what you did is no different than getting between
me and A.J. at the grill, you know, taking a chance to save me."
Carly: "I ran a couple of blocks."
Sonny: "You charged in here yelling. For all you know, Roy, you know, had a weapon.
Now, I don't mind you warning me, but--as long as you got to pick up the phone.
What I don't want to happen is you to get hurt because of me."
Carly: "Well, I understand."
Sonny: "But then you jump right in the middle. You always do that."
Carly: "I just don't want you to go to prison."
Sonny: "Well, hey, you know what? That might not be too bad. I mean, me locked
up, right? You get sole custody of the baby and Michael, right? What do you think
of that? Huh? Free and clear of the Quartermaines. That could be a sweet deal."
Carly: "Matter of fact, maybe I should go track Roy down, see if I can get him
to rat you out after al"
Sonny: "Did you say, 'rat me out'?"
Carly: "Then again, if you want to be a jerk, I don't need Roy. I'll go straight
to his boss and I'll rat you out myself."
Sonny: "Oh, yeah?"
Carly: "Yeah."
Sonny: "You'll rat me out?"
Carly: "I will."
Sonny: "All right, you know what? You've had enough stress for today. Why don't
I take you and Michael to the park."
Carly: "Really?"
Sonny: "Yeah. You know, you can relax. I can swing Michael."
Carly: "No, we'll do it together."
Sonny: "But the point is you got to relax is what I'm saying."
Carly: "Well, I don't need to relax. I'll go get Michael. I can feel you worrying."
Sonny: "Could you possibly hurry up? Hurry, hurry."
Carly: "Yeah! Funny."
Two things went through my mind in this sequence. First, I couldn't help but
compare Roy's confession of the truth to the desperate, pitiful scene we had with
Hannah when Sonny confronted her with the tapes of her FBI meeting. Would he have
respected her at all if she'd told the truth? Second, I couldn't help think of
Carly's nightmare, when she imagined Hannah being closer to her mother than she
was. I wonder if this new connection between characters will put more stress on
the Bobbie/Carly relationship. So far, we haven't had any more bonding between
Bobbie and Hannah, but I'm sure Carly will feel slighted.
At the same time, the last time Carly chose Bobbie over Sonny it got her nowhere,
really, though I liked seeing it. This time, she's made a different choice. Either
way, it seems, she can't get anywhere with Bobbie. So why not choose Sonny?
VI. I'm Getting Married in the Morning...Not (4/7, 4/10)
Sonny: "You read him that stuff with all those, like, weird creatures or what?"
Carly: "Oh, it's his favorite."
Sonny: "Oh, really?"
Carly: "Yeah."
Sonny: "You don't think it makes him a little s-c-a-r-y?"
Carly: "No, he loves it."
Sonny: "How you doing, buddy? Because you're a tough kid. You're a tough kid."
Sonny: "Come here. I'm going to show you something. No, this way. Come here.
Look at this. Watch this. Bring your little truck. Look out this window. You probably
don't remember this, but when you were a little baby, Jason--he used to look out
this window every night. You see that big building over there? You own half of
it. Same with the pier."
Michael: "Go in there."
Sonny: "Yeah, well, that, too. You'll own everything. You know what I mean? Huh?
Maybe one day I'll take you to see the whole place. What do you think?"
Carly: "I don't know. Maybe one day the three of us, we could go."
Sonny: "Yeah?"
Carly: "Yeah. I mean, it's big, and everything you say echoes. I think he'd love
that."
Sonny: "You ready to go to sleep, Michael?"
Carly: "Yeah, it's time."
Sonny: "Let's go. No, no, I got him. I got him, I got him. We're going to go upstairs.
We're going to play. You're going to run that truck. You're getting heavy. This
boy's getting heavy, I'm telling you that."
Carly: "Tell me about it."
Carly: "You know, I can't believe he went right to sleep for you."
Sonny: "You know, it's a guy thing, you know? You know, they know who's boss."
Carly: "Oh, yeah? Yeah?"
Sonny: "Yeah."
Carly: "I don't think so. Oh. You know what the truth is, though?"
Sonny: "Huh?"
Carly: "The place--this place--it's a home for Michael. Since we came here, he
doesn't wake up in the middle of the night and cry for Jason anymore. I got to
thank you for that."
Sonny: "You're welcome."
Carly watched Sonny stand at the window with Michael, as she had watched Jason
with him before.
Carly: "You know, I have my appointment with dr. Meadows next week for
my ultrasound."
Sonny: "Yeah?"
Carly: "Yeah. You can come if you want to."
Sonny: "Ok. Well, you know, if you let me know when it is so I can plan around
it, you know--"
Carly: "Plan what?"
Sonny: "Uh--our wedding. I talked to Father Coates, and he's going to, you know,
marry us next week."
They had been smiling and teasing and generally getting along well, until
Sonny dropped this bomb. I couldn't believe he thought this was the best way to
get what he wanted. Or maybe he knew the wedding wouldn't go through, and he was
just pushing back, to see what she'd do.
On the next day:
Carly: "Married. Right. You and me. Can't you just see us walking down the
aisle?"
Sonny: "More or less."
Carly: "You with a top hat and tails, me with a veil and matching tent. June would
be good, don't you think? The flowers will be blooming, and so will I."
Sonny: "How about next week?"
Carly: "April's iffy. The weather could go either way. Wouldn't want my mile-long
train getting caught in a blizzard, now, would we?"
Sonny: "You got a strange sense of humor."
Carly: "You have an even stranger sense of humor."
Sonny: "How about we--how about we throw a dinner or something?"
Carly: "What, no matron of honor? Monica would be crushed. And all my friends--you
know, my girlfriends would be lining up around the block to be my bridesmaids--Emily,
Elizabeth, that lady that sells hotdogs down by the docks. Where would we put
the crowds of adoring friends that gather to throw rose petals at our feet?"
Sonny: "Benny would throw rose petals. I'm sure Johnny would, too, if I asked
him."
Carly: "I wish Edward were here. You know, he's so completely off about you."
Sonny: "How about Edward as the ring bearer? Grr."
Carly: "People assume that you're humorless because your fun side doesn't exactly
pop out. But, you know, when you get going, you're a riot."
Sonny: "Hmm. Edward thinks I'm humorless? Well, you know, he's partially right
because when it comes to basics I don't kid around. We are getting married, Carly.
No joke."
Carly: "People are getting pregnant at sperm banks."
Sonny: "Not with my kids, they're not."
Sonny: "We live together. We're raising two kids. What's a couple if we're
not a couple?"
Carly: "Two people who love each other."
Sonny: "Oh, and all those people that are running around in the park with their
children, you think they all love each other? Stop being so naive."
Sonny: "Why can't we just skip the part where we fall in love and break up
eventually and concentrate on what's important, which is raising Michael and our
baby?"
Sonny: "We hit rough spots, but I like you all right."
Carly: "That's a line to melt a woman's heart."
Sonny: "Oh, you want a line?"
Carly: "No, I don't want a line. I want you to stop. Just stop. Just go back to
being who you are."
Sonny: "But you don't even know who I am. That's the problem."
Carly: "Exactly. I don't know who you are. That's another good reason to stay
away from the justice of the peace."
Sonny: "We're getting married by a priest."
Carly: "Oh, my god. You're having a psychotic episode."
Carly: "I can do that. Last name, Corinthos. First name, Corinthos. You know
what? If it's a girl, Corintha."
Sonny: "We are getting married."
Carly: "Like hell we are."
Sonny: "You got a better offer?"
Carly: "What, am I on the auction block?"
Sonny: "Well, I don't see a crowd of Romeos lined up at the front door."
Carly: "So that makes me desperate?"
Sonny: "Oh, have you spotted the personals lately? There's a lot of crazy stuff
in there, you know, like, 'Successful man seeks pregnant mama with toddler and
felony record.'"
Carly: "That's fine, Sonny. Get mean."
Sonny: "'No career prospects necessary. Professional liar'? Ok."
Carly: "When you don't get what you want, you get nasty."
Sonny: "And what are you, a cupcake?"
Carly: "It's about me. This is about me--what I need, what I want--and I'll
be damned if I'm going to marry another man that I can't even pretend to love."
Sonny: "And my kid is not going to be stuck with some jerk that you think you
like."
Carly: "Well, see, the thing is you really can't tell me who I can be with."
Sonny: "Well, give me my kid, and I won't."
Carly: "I'm going to stay this once, so listen very carefully. This is not up
for debate. Next time I get married, it will be for love."
Sonny: "Oh. Ok, Carly, take a stand. You'll be single the rest of your life."
Carly: "I realize you think I'm dog meat--"
Sonny: "Well, how'd you come up with that?"
Carly: "But I'm not saying that I don't have issues, because I've made some mistakes
and I will continue to make them. But there is somebody inside here that's worth
loving, and I'm going to wait until somebody comes along who sees those things."
Sonny: "Oh, hold on. I got it. You're--you're holding out for Jason."
Carly: "Jason is my proof that somebody that I love can love me."
Sonny: "If it didn't end for Jason the night we went to bed, it ended when
I told him you were pregnant. You don't come back from that."
Carly: "He raised A.J.'s son, didn't he? Who's going to keep him from raising
yours? You? I don't think so."
Sonny: "Dream on, sweetheart."
Sonny: "Come on, Carly! Jason wouldn't touch this with a 10-foot pole!"
Carly: "No, but you would? You'd take everything that's his--me, Michael, his
life? I want to know what makes you think you're entitled."
Sonny: "I made a mistake that I'm going to regret every day of my life. You--I
can't fix it. I'm trying to do what's right."
Carly: "Then do what's right. I'm all for that. Forget about marrying me."
Carly: "Even if Jason never comes back--"
Sonny: "Carly, he's gone. Accept it."
Carly: "I didn't know what love was before I met Jason. But now I do. And, you
know, even if he never comes home to me, if I never love anybody else for the
rest of my life, I still won't forget the feeling. And I can't settle."
Sonny: "It's getting late. Go to bed. Get some sleep."
Carly: "I'm not going to change my mind. I don't love you. I can't marry you,
and I never will."
At this point, I started thinking of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara. Here
was the discussion of marrying men she doesn't love, and while Sonny's answer
wasn't that she could marry him for fun, the feeling was the same. After all,
she does love another man at this point. The comparisons would continue for me
with the miscarriage, and I enjoyed imagining them in Gone With the Wind
costumes. *g*
