Sonny and Carly:
- Carly isn't hurt from being knocked to the ground, but an irate Sonny grabs
AJ by the throat. Taggert pulls them apart and sends AJ away. At home, Sonny tells
Carly that she has to walk away from scenes like that rather than jumping in the
middle, and she gets mad that he doesn't thank her, just gives her the rules,
and that he only cares about the baby. Later, she comes into his bedroom to retrieve
Michael, who's wandered in. And when Sonny has a nightmare about Lily, and Carly
wakes him up and comforts him. (4/3)
- Sonny tells Carly that the fight with AJ scared him, and she understands more
clearly why he gets angry when she fights with AJ. Sonny realizes that he can
trust Carly. (4/4)
- After coming to an agreement with Sonny over breakfast, Carly drops by the
brownstone and overhears Hannah and Bobbie talking. Realizing that Hannah is Roy's
daughter, she leaves immediately and runs back to the penthouse to tell Sonny.
(4/5)
- The meeting with Roy and Sonny, however, is going well, and Sonny believes
that Roy has told him the truth at great risk to himself. He tells Carly that
he owes Roy for that, and for not turning him in to the FBI, but she's still wary
of Roy. Sonny's still irritated a little, but not angry, and he and Carly prepare
to take Michael to the park together. (4/5)
- As Bobbie and Carly discuss their loyalties, Sonny offers Roy some money,
which Roy turns down. While on the docks, Sonny meets Rae Cummings. He tells her
that he gave the desk to charity. Later, Sonny informs Carly that she will marry
him the next week. (4/7)
- Carly says that she won't marry Sonny because she doesn't love him; he wants
to marry because of the kids. He realizes that she's still waiting for Jason.
(4/10)
- Carly still won't agree to marry Sonny, even when--especially when--he brings
a priest over for premarital counseling. She threatens to leave. (4/13)
- When Sonny insists, she takes Michael and leaves. But she fights with Bobbie,
who won't let her stay at the brownstone, and ends up with no place to go. Meanwhile,
Sonny promises Bobbie that he'll try to help Roy. Carly leaves anyway, and Sonny
lets her go. (4/14)
I. The Fight With AJ Ends (4/3)
Carly: "Sonny, let him go. I'm ok. You don't have to hurt him."
A.J.: "Did you see that? That guy's crazy!"
Taggert: "Have you ever heard of anger management?"
Sonny: "Let me tell you something. If you ever see this woman, you disappear
because if you even glance her way, I promise you--"
Taggert: "Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. I wouldn't go there, Sonny."
Carly: "Take me home. Come on."
Sonny: "I'm warning you."
A.J.: "What are you doing?"
Taggert: "Shut up."
A.J.: "What, are you letting him walk out? I want him arrested now."
Taggert: "Fine. Then I'm going to book you on two counts of aggravated assault."
A.J.: "What are you talking about? That was an accident."
Taggert: "Yeah, yeah. Flattening the pregnant woman was an accident, but not raising
the bottle at his head. Now, you listen to me, you little punk. We don't have
cable in lockup. But I'm sure you and Sonny could share a cell together, and I'm
sure that would prove to be quite entertaining."
Carly: "You want to go for a walk or something for a little while?"
Sonny: "No, I don't want you to catch a cold."
Carly: "No, I'm fine. It's actually not that bad. It might make you feel better."
Sonny: "Me? I'm not the one who fell on the floor. Just wrap yourself up in your
scarf because it's windy out there."
II. Home Sweet Home (4/3)
Johnny: "You had a visitor."
Sonny: "Not now, Johnny."
Carly: "Do you know what I was thinking all the way home in the car? Driving
A.J. back into the bottle was the one thing that I wanted more than anything in
life. Making A.J. drink was my ultimate goal. Marrying him was just a strategy.
I know you and Jason thought that I was nuts, but my game plan was basically sound.
It was a great concept. Just lousy execution. Story of my life. But I have to
hand it to his family, though. You know, they destroyed A.J. beyond my wildest
dreams. If he weren't such a jerk, I'd kind of feel sorry for him. You know? Next
time I see that idiot, I'm going to turn--"
Sonny: "No, no, no, no, no, no, no, Carly. Do you hear me? This can't ever happen
again."
Carly once told Jason that she felt sorry for AJ too. I suspect that even
if she had gone through with her plan with flawless execution, that pity would
have kicked in and she would have found it hard to go through with it. At the
same time, AJ's attitude (and abusive treatment of her, in my estimation) made
it much easier for her to hate him than to feel sorry for him. That said, lots
of people would disagree with me on the Carly score. But I was glad to see that
she still had that glimmer of pity here.
Sonny: "I don't care if it's A.J. or some lunatic off the street. I don't care
if it's a hired assassin or some guy you think you know. You don't jump in the
middle when somebody's coming after me. You stay away. You do what you got to--you
run. I don't know. Whatever you got to do."
Carly: "You're welcome."
Sonny: "Oh. You still don't get--you still don't get it, do you?"
Carly: "No, I get it. I get it."
Sonny: "Oh."
Carly: "On your list of things that are important, the baby's number one--"
Sonny: "Mm-hmm."
Carly: "That's more important than loyalty. That's more important than I am. As
far as you're concerned, I'm just expendable."
Sonny: "Why do you think I got you under 24-hour guard?"
Carly: "Because I'm pregnant with your child, and I can't drop dead until the
baby's born."
Sonny: "Ok. You know what? Think what you want. I don't give a damn. The only
thing that matters is how you behave."
Carly: "How I behave. What am I, a child now?"
Sonny: "You act like one, I treat you like one."
Sonny nodded along with her until she said that she didn't count. As she stormed
off following the next line, she paused to look back at him.
Carly: "No. You know what? To hell with you and your stupid rules. What's in
them for me? I mean, you're a control freak. There's nothing in it for me. I don't
get a 'thank you'? I don't get a pat on the back? I don't get a smile? Not from
you. Not from you, not ever?"
Carly: "Sorry."
Sonny: "It's all right."
Carly: "I was looking for his elephant book, and he scampered down the hall."
Sonny: "Oh. Gave your ma the old slip, huh? What's that about, Michael?"
Sonny remembers Lily laughing, then Carly, then Lily, and then the AJ with
the bottle knocking Carly into the table. Michael comes into the room and says
goodnight, keeping him from remembering anymore, but he remembers it in his dreams.
Sonny: "No, don't--don't. Don't go. Lily, no! Let--come back!"
Carly: "Sonny? Sonny?"
Sonny's got those same blue satin sheets on the bed, and when Carly comes
to him she's in her blue robe. She wakes him up and he grabs her arm.
III. Chase the Nightmares Away (4/4)
He pulls away and she turns on the light.
Sonny: "What are you doing here?"
Carly: "I heard you. I thought something was wrong."
Sonny: "You all right?"
Carly: "I'm fine. You were having another nightmare, huh?"
Sonny: "Yeah, whatever, you know. Sorry I woke you. You should go back to bed."
Carly: "You were dreaming about your wife, weren't you?"
Carly moves to leave, then pauses to ask her question.
Carly: "Right before I woke you up you said Lily's name. When I stayed
with you before Jason came home last summer, you told me you dream about her sometimes."
Sonny: "I'm all right. Don't worry about me, ok?"
Carly: "You said 'Don't go.' Were you seeing her walk to the car?"
Sonny: "Yeah. I was watching her walk towards the car. She looked back, smiled.
But then all of a sudden, she's standing on the stairs with our kid. They're waving
good-bye. Whew. I know what's going to happen next, but I can't stop it. Then
you woke me up."
Sonny: "How about you? You all right after, you know, A.J. knocked you down? You
got any aches and pains?"
Carly: "Nah. I'm ok. He didn't even hit me. I'm fine."
Sonny: "I knew he was going to explode. I should've stopped him."
Carly: "God, I'm fine. The baby's fine. But if he had hurt me or the baby, you'd
be the first person I told. We're really ok. Promise."
Sonny's right that Carly pushes too far. But sometimes it's for the best,
like when he was so bad and she stayed with him. This was one of those times,
I think. She sits with him after his story is finished, and then she moves his
hand to feel her stomach and they both laugh, nervous as well as relieved.
Carly: "It's, like, right--no, it's, like, sort of right there. Can you feel
that?"
Sonny: "Yeah, it's a little bit of a--yeah, a little bump."
Carly: "Won't be little for very long. I got as big as a house with Michael."
Sonny: "Thank you."
Carly: "You know, I know that my job is to protect myself and this baby. So
I'm sorry. Next time A.J. aims a bottle at you, I'll hide. And then I'll yell."
Sonny: "This is never going to happen again."
Carly: "I did dazzle that coffee guy, though, didn't I?"
Sonny: "Yeah, yeah, you did."
Carly: "Least he left before A.J. started throwing things."
Sonny: "That's true. At least I didn't get arrested this time. Maybe I should
stop meeting this guy."
Carly: "Maybe you should just go to another restaurant."
Sonny: "Oh, no, no, because I like the cook at the grill."
Carly: "Boys and their territory. I'm sorry that I scared you by falling down."
Sonny: "That's not what scared me."
She moved to the sofa and lay down so he could feel better the child she's
carrying (we opened with a great shot of their hands on her stomach, which showed
Jason's rings still on her finger), then pulled up her feet so he could sit down
with her. When he told her that the fall was not what scared him, I actually smiled.
I love these two together, and while some complain that they're getting together
too quickly, I think the pace is just right. The sex was too fast, but they aren't
in love yet, they're just working towards it. And this was still about Lily and
Sonny's fears just as much as it was about him not wanting to lose Carly. But
that was a part of it too, I think.
Sonny: "When you hit that table, it was, like, everything was in slow motion,
you know? Everything falling but me not being able to stop it. Don't ever put
yourself in danger for me. Never. You understand me?"
Carly: "I do now."
Sonny: "Ok. That's--that's what I--that's what I wanted to say downstairs, but
I--I didn't handle it right."
Carly: "Well, I could have been a little more understanding. You've been good
to me."
Sonny: "Yeah."
Carly: "Very good, much to my amazement. You asked one thing--that I respect your
privacy--and I didn't do it. I'm sorry. But I will. And I want you to know that
you can trust me."
Sonny: "It's been pointed out to me that there's a difference between letting
your mother go into my desk and spying for the FBI."
Carly: "Are you saying that you overreacted?"
Sonny: "No, no, no, no. I'm not, but I'm just saying there's a chance that, you
know, people can learn from their mistakes and--maybe--and I'm willing to try."
Carly: "Yeah?"
Sonny: "Yeah."
Carly: "Me, too. It's better than goading each other into something crazy. Ends
up hurting everyone."
Sonny: "Well, I'd rather not hurt you."
Sonny: "Well, you should go back to bed. You know, I'll try not to bother
you again."
Carly: "There's no bother. Good night. Sleep well."
Sonny: "Yeah, you, too."
The line about people learning from their mistakes seemed to say that he was
willing to try because she had learned from hers. But I think it was an admission
that he'd made a mistake, and was willing to try to learn from it. This relationship
with Carly would be different, for me, because Sonny would actually seem to learn
lessons where he hadn't before. Carly too. Perhaps that's why I like them together
so much.
Afterwards she reached across him to pick up her robe. Later, Sonny was sleeping
like a baby, while Carly was the one tossing and turning. Crack me up.
IV. Just Call Me Angel of the Morning (4/5)
Carly: "I know you said not to, but I felt like having eggs this morning. Protein,
you know? And whole wheat toast. But I promise I'll clean up after myself."
Sonny: "Whatever you want."
Carly: "What did you just say?"
Sonny: "You heard me."
Carly: "But I thought I wasn't allowed to use the kitchen."
Sonny: "And you didn't listen. What else is new?"
Carly: "No. I live here. I mean, I--well, I don't see what the big deal is, that
I shouldn't be allowed to ask to use the kitchen every now and then?"
Sonny: "Well, that's the part you missed--asking."
Carly: "Oh."
Sonny: "Yeah."
Carly: "Ok. Sonny?"
Sonny: "Uh-huh?"
Carly: "May I use the kitchen?"
Sonny: "Uh--if you clean up after yourself, sure."
Carly: "Is this, like, on a permanent basis or just a one-time thing?"
Sonny: "Do you ever, like, not push things, or do you just--"
Carly: "No, I just--ok, I want to know what the rules are--"
Sonny: "Oh."
Carly: "So I don't break them again."
Sonny: "All right, the rules are you can go in the kitchen any time you want.
Don't go into my desk, don't use my private line, and if I tell you something's
none of your business, then you stay out of it. You think you can manage that?"
Carly: "Yeah."
Sonny: "Good."
Carly: "Did I mention I was making eggs? I could make you some, too, if you didn't
already eat at Kelly's."
Sonny: "Yeah. Breakfast would be nice."
Carly: "Coming right up."
Carly: "It's no so bad, hmm?"
Sonny: "You didn't burn anything."
Carly: "You know what? Ok. You are the stingiest person I have ever met in my
life with compliments."
Sonny: "All right. Um--thank you, Carly, for cooking this breakfast for me."
Carly: "You're welcome, Sonny."
Carly: "There's a registration form here for Lamaze. I don't suppose you'd
be interested in that?"
Sonny: "Well, I mean, you're the one having the baby. You know, if you need somebody
to coach you to do all that breathing stuff--because that's what Lamaze is, right,
a lot of breathing?"
Carly: "I don't know. I think so. I don't really remember very much about it because
I never ended up using it. I had Michael--I had an emergency cesarean with Michael."
Sonny: "Right."
Carly: "But Tony was really into the whole coaching idea. He was always going
on about participating in his child's birth, and if you feel that way, you know--"
Sonny: "No. I mean, you know, I'm asking you how you feel."
Carly: "Honestly?"
Sonny: "Yeah."
Carly: "I'd rather be on drugs."
Sonny: "Ok."
Carly: "I'm not really into pain, you know, and I--I just imagine you coaching
me. I'd pick a fight and then we'd be screaming at each other the whole time while
our baby's being born."
Sonny: "Plus, we decided that we didn't want to fight in front of the baby."
Carly: "Right, I remember."
Sonny: "So we should just skip Lamaze."
Carly: "Yeah."
Sonny: "Right, all right."
Carly: "But you know, I mean, if you want to, then we can do it because I don't
want to deprive you of anything. It's your child, too."
Sonny: "But, see, you know, the thing--all I care about is that you and the baby
are ok, so whatever you decide, it's fine with me."
Carly: "Really?"
Sonny: "Right."
Carly: "What is Francis going to do, Sonny? He's going to stand around the
better dress department of Wyndham's while I try on dresses?"
