The Spencers (cont.):

VII. A New Plan (4/11)

Luke: "The only thing we can do is split up again and keep looking for him."
Felicia: "I can't do that. It's time for me to go home now."

Felicia: "If you think you need me, I'll stay."
Luke: "Oh, no, look, you go home. Go on home."
Felicia: "Sorry. I really wanted to do this for you."
Luke: "Hey, Felicia, listen--"
Felicia: "I wanted to help you bring your son back."
Luke: "Stop it, stop it. You went way beyond the call. I couldn't have asked for a better friend."
Felicia: "Me, too. All right, well--find Lucky. I'll go home to my family. Good luck."
Laura: "You, too."
Luke: "Bye."

Laura raises an eyebrow as Felicia announces her departure, and she winces a second as Luke hugs her goodbye. But her wish of luck is genuine.

Laura: "You know what I don't understand? That waitress told us that Lucky was waiting for us, right? So why wait for us and then hit you and run away?"
Luke: "I don't know. None of it makes any sense to me."
Laura: "Yeah, but I keep telling myself that he left a trail, right? I mean, there was the shirt you found, there were the map of Port Charles, the initials on the rock. You don't leave clues unless you want somebody to follow you, right? So the only thing that makes sense to me is that maybe somebody else was here or watching this place who works for Stefan and Helena and Lucky knew that."
Luke: "That could be it."
Laura: "Yeah. He was doing it to protect us. Maybe we were walking into some kind of a trap."
Luke: "That absolutely could be it. Ok, but all we know for sure is that Helena was here with him and this time she wasn't. So that's got to mean that either he escaped or she turned him loose."
Laura: "Why would she do that?"
Luke: "I don't know. These are the people that thought freezing the world was a good idea. Who knows why they do what they do? I think we have to assume that he escaped. Now we just got to find him before she does."
Laura: "He'd probably go to Elizabeth. I think he'd go straight to Elizabeth."

I notice, in the dialogue above, that Laura runs "Stefan and Helena" together without batting an eye.

Luke: "Darling, listen. If you're right and he went home, one of us should be there. And if he did go home, Lulu needs you. Ok?"

Luke: "Ok, I'll call you. If we both come up empty, then we'll decide what to do from there."
Laura: "All right, thanks."
Luke: "Tell cupcake I love her."
Laura: "Oh, I will. Please be careful, Luke."
Luke: "Darling, you be careful."
Laura: "See you."
Luke: "We'll find him."

I have a note that somebody here was wearing brown, if not both of them. They both dressed almost always in brown in their first weeks back in 1993: Luke always wore a brown leather jacket, and Laura was often in brown and other autumn colors.

Laura: "Did you get in touch with Mac and the girls?"
Felicia: "No, not yet."
Laura: "Sorry."
Felicia: "Thanks. Me, too."
Laura: "I hope you do."

Felicia sat alone after they left and cried as she looked at her wedding ring.

Katie: "He didn't mention anyplace specific. He just said that his family moved around a lot and that he could take care of himself and that he couldn't stay and see a movie because he had to keep moving."
Luke: "Wait a minute. He's hitchhiking. Of course. It's been a long time since I lived in this town. Isn't there a truck stop down here?"
Katie: "Yeah, right near the interstate."
Luke: "Great. Oh, you've been so helpful. Listen, would you give this to Dottie for my sandwich and her help. And please accept this and my eternal gratitude. Thank you very much. And I'll take this. Bye-bye."

I really think there's been somebody else named "Dottie" in one of Luke's stories--maybe the "big frousy red-head" at the airport a few years back. He takes the sandwich and goes, looking hopeful.

VIII. All I Want is a Room Somewhere (4/12)

Emily: "Elizabeth, you're going to see him again. I know it."
Elizabeth: "Me, too, in my heart."

Man: "So, is anybody going to come around looking for you?"
Lucky: "Not the cops."
Woman: "Want to see the room?"
Lucky: "Sure."
Man: "It isn't much."
Lucky: "Oh, I don't need much."

Man: "Family troubles?"
Lucky: "Could say that."

Lucky: "I've been on my own for a long time. My brother and little sister live over in Port Charles. I want to stay close to them until I figure out what to do next."
Man: "Are your parents around?"
Lucky: "I can't promise they're not going to show up, just so you know. But if they do, I'll deal with them. You won't have to."
Woman: "But you can cover the deposit and the first month's rent?"
Lucky: "Yes."
Man: "And what happens when your cash runs out?"
Lucky: "I have some ideas on that."

Man: "You're going to do all this in return for rent?"
Lucky: "Can you deal with that?"
Man: "Well, we were going to hire somebody."
Woman: "This would be cheaper."
Man: "Well, call it a deal."
Lucky: "Thanks. I'll look at that laptop."
Woman: "That'd be great."
Lucky: "But first I'm going to go check out some old territory."

In the closing shot, Lucky the same corner into the Kelly's courtyard as he did in 1993. This time, he looked in the window as the episode closes.

Amy: "I have to say, in Wednesday's episode when Lucky was talking to the bar owners, the delivery left a bit to be desired. Every line was said in that way with the same tone, and in the same manner as the stuff with Helena. But it was the first time I've been anything but pleased with his performance, so maybe it was just that scene."

"But in terms of storyline, rather than performance, the Lucky thing is beginning to fall flat, now that he's away from Helena. The only thing going right now is anticipation, and we've had that since what, late January when we first saw Helena visit Lucky's hand and taunt Stefan with the picture he wouldn't look at? The pacing is really slow, and the payoffs almost non-existent and always limited in some way. I can't put my finger on it, but it's just not working."

"I have enjoyed some of the L&L stuff along the way. But the Elizabeth stuff is just utterly boring. And it's clear to me that the goal is to put off the big stuff until May sweeps, and I shouldn't be sitting here thinking, 'Oh, Lesley won't see Lucky because we're waiting for sweeps.'"

"That said, I have enjoyed the bit players we've had along the way--the waitress at the Triple L, and even more the couple who run the bar Lucky's working at. Sandy, I believe her name is, is fantastic. That part of this is reminiscent of the old L&L days, where we might go three rounds of trying to get the Ice Princess for Alexandria, and each round might look really similar, and we would have the same conversations over and over, but the bit players and conversations and anticipation along the way were working."

Joan: "The trouble is, we see people we care about (and some we don't care about) worried over, yet full of hope about, someone we see actively avoiding them. It diminishes Lucky in our eyes, something that wasn't the case when he was Helena's traveling companion."

"But if I have to endure Elizabeth's smug certainty that Lucky is just sitting around Greenwich Village (which I, a NYC resident of 30+ years, never realized was so tiny. There are, after all, some 11 million people in NYC, not all of whom avoid the Village) waiting for her to intuit his whereabouts, I'm going to scream."

"Yeah, I love the minor characters. If nothing else, the search for Lucky has unearthed a host of appealing minor characters in a natural manner notably lacking in other storylines. Beside Sandy and DinerDoll, we've had the ship-selling Charleston guy. I could have seen a bit more of him."

Elizabeth: "Do you really believe Stefan?"
Nikolas: "I don't know what to believe, you know? He's acting so weird."
Elizabeth: "How could Helena just let Lucky go?"
Nikolas: "Well, I'm not sure that's even what happened."
Elizabeth: "What if he doesn't have any money? What if he's lost?"
Nikolas: "Hey, Lucky's good at this. You told me that yourself."
Elizabeth: "But what if he's hurt?"
Nikolas: "Helena wouldn't hurt him."
Elizabeth: "Oh, we don't know what Helena could do. If Lucky's out there, why hasn't he called? Why hasn't he come to see us?"
Nikolas: "I'm going after him."
Elizabeth: "Me, too."
Nikolas: "We will find him."
Elizabeth: "Even if Luke and Laura couldn't?"
Nikolas: "You were closer to Lucky than anyone that last year. You know how he thinks. You'll know exactly where to look."
Elizabeth: "Wouldn't that be something if we really found him?"
Nikolas: "It could happen."
Elizabeth: "I hope so."
Nikolas: "You know what? I'll make all the arrangements, and we can try to leave tonight."
Elizabeth: "And I've got to clear it with Chloe and Bobbie."
Nikolas: "We can do this."
Elizabeth: "I know."
Nikolas: "All right, I'll see you."
Elizabeth: "Ok."

IX. Tag Team Searching (4/13)

Bobbie: "Well, how is my very favorite niece in the whole wide world?"
Lesley Lu: "I'm your only niece."

Laura: "I missed you so much. Do you know why mama was gone so long? Well, you know, daddy was looking for that something very, very special, and mommy went to look, too. Well, we found it. But we weren't able to bring it home just yet, and I just missed my little girl so, so much, I had to come home and see you, but daddy's still out there looking, and he's going to bring that something special home very soon."

Lesley: "How are you?"
Laura: "You know, I don't know how to answer that. My son's alive. That's all I can think about."
Lesley: "That's a wise choice. How did he seem?"
Laura: "Physically, fine."
Lesley: "And otherwise?"
Laura: "I don't know. I--I--"
Lesley: "Laura, this is good news."
Laura: "I know."
Lesley: "No matter what else."
Laura: "I know."

Elizabeth: "So, wait, did I misunderstand something? I mean, you found Lucky, but you couldn't bring him home?"
Laura: "And he hasn't contacted you, then."
Elizabeth: "No."
Laura: "Oh. I was hoping maybe he had."
Elizabeth: "Why, what's going on?"

Laura: "It was--it was amazing. We walked in, and he was sitting there at the counter."
Elizabeth: "Oh, god."
Laura: "I know. I know. And I went over to him to give him a hug and--I don't know. It was very strange. He was unresponsive, almost like he didn't even know me. And then Luke went to reach for him, and he punched him."
Elizabeth: "What? Wait--that doesn't make any sense. I mean, Lucky stopped being mad at you and Luke."
Laura: "I don't know. I--I don't get it. But then unfortunately he darted past us, and we lost him."
Elizabeth: "I'm sorry."
Laura: "It's ok."
Elizabeth: "I'm sorry. I know you have your own feelings to deal with."
Laura: "Oh, stop. Don't apologize, please. It's overwhelming. It's more than any heart can handle."

Laura: "You know, I saw on the news that Helena has been taken into custody. But her reach is very long. You would have to be very careful."
Elizabeth: "We will be. And now that there's no doubt that Lucky's alive, I just can't sit around and do nothing. You know, I have to do something to help bring him home."
Laura: "I know. I understand. I get it."
Elizabeth: "And since nobody knows the plans that Lucky and I made better than me, what if there's something that somebody else misses that I get and it'll lead us to wherever he went?"
Laura: "Yes, that's true. I also can't imagine him ever being angry with you. You know, you might be able to figure out what's going on here, and then you can tell us."

Tammy: "Listen, you take care of her, ok? She's precious cargo."
Nikolas: "I--I will. Something happened."
Elizabeth: "Laura's back."
Nikolas: "Lucky?"
Elizabeth: "They found him, Nikolas. They found him!"

Nikolas: "Do we need to stop by your grandmother's?"
Elizabeth: "No, no, I already told her we were leaving."
Nikolas: "Well, how'd she react?"
Elizabeth: "Oh, she wasn't thrilled, but I didn't expect her to be. Bottom line--she knows that finding Lucky is the most important thing to me, so she's not going to stand in my way."
Nikolas: "As if anyone could. He's back, and we're going to bring him home."

We had our first moment of Liz turning around to just miss seeing Lucky watching her in this episode. Later, he looks in to see Liz with Lesley and Lulu. I note that Laura has no problem with the kids going off; she used to do it herself, after all. And she knows Liz has to go. Somehow, I know that Stefan wouldn't be happy about it. As Nikolas swings Liz around, excited at the thought of finding Lucky, Lucky is standing by the phone outside, watching them.

Judy: "The workings of Helena and Faison must be far-reaching indeed, as I feel as if I've been programmed to be repulsed (okay, just bored) by the sight or sound of Liz and Nik."

X. Surprise Meeting (4/14)

Stefan: "Ahem. Well, this is a surprise. I thought you'd be with your ex in parts unknown looking for your son."
Laura: "If you'll excuse me, I have a lot to do."
Stefan: "If you feel this much animosity toward me, how comfortable will you be working here at the hospital?"
Laura: "I'll be fine."
Stefan: "You won't have a problem with me?"
Laura: "Not unless you make yourself one."

Laura: "You know, about the last thing on my mind right now is whether or not I'm working with you."
Stefan: "Will you continue to search for Lucky, then?"
Laura: "Of course I will. I've seen him with my own eyes. I'll never stop looking for my son until I've brought him home."
Stefan: "I understand."
Laura: "If you know more than you've said, please tell me."
Stefan: "What's the use? Whatever I say, you won't believe."
Laura: "Good point."

Stefan: "Laura Spencer's at the hospital. She'll be leaving soon. Follow her."

XI. Back to the Triple L (4/14)

Nikolas: "You really think that my mom cooked for all these people every day?"

Nikolas: "I'm Lucky's brother, Nikolas."
Katie: "Hi. You're not his sister, though, are you?"
Elizabeth: "No, no, I'm--Lucky and I are friends--best friends."

Katie: "He's the kind of guy that's easy to get close to. I liked him right off. I think he liked me."

Elizabeth: "Did Lucky mention anything about wanting to go home?"
Katie: "No. Lucky's parents asked me that, too. I sort of got the feeling he didn't have a home and he really didn't care."

Katie: "You sure are going through a lot of trouble to find Lucky when you don't even know if he wants to be found."

Katie: "I thought about something while you were gone. I don't know if it means anything, but Lucky said he was through living in the past. From now on, he was totally into the future."

Nikolas: "Am I picking up a little jealousy here?"
Elizabeth: "Oh, I've just never had to think about Lucky being with another girl before."
Nikolas: "You still don't. So, what would the future mean to Lucky?"
Elizabeth: "Greenwich village. It was our dream to go to New York."

XII. On the Road Again (4/14)

Lesley: "So where are you and Luke going to start your search?"
Laura: "In the middle of the country. He's going to work to the west, I'll work to the east, and we'll just hit every city that we ever spent any time in, show pictures of Lucky, talk to people. Someone must have seen him."
Lesley: "I'm just glad that you guys are close again."
Laura: "We do make a good team."
Lesley: "Mm-hmm. It's a start. And once Lucky's back home, who knows?"
Laura: "It's not the same, though."
Lesley: "Well, but you are going to stay in touch, the two of you, as you go your separate ways?"
Laura: "Yes, absolutely. Every day. And if we don't find him within two weeks, we're going to meet back here and come up with another strategy."
Lesley: "My prayer is that all three of you will be back here by then."

Lesley Lu: "Lucky. You came back from heaven."
