The Quartermaines:
- Juan and Nikolas continue to quarrel at L&B when Nikolas walks in on Juan
making a demo tape. Juan won't let Nikolas hear it, and Emily explains that he's
worried about living up to Miguel Morez, his father. Elizabeth arrives and notes
that it's hard to do artistic things in front of other people. Nikolas says that
he understands and will support Juan if Juan will let him. After Nikolas and Elizabeth
leave, Juan says that Nikolas is right, that he has to get used to people listening
to him. He's just glad that his girlfriend is there with him, supporting him.
(3/1)
- Edward comes home to Lila with the good news that Chloe can see, and he announces
his intentions to keep Michael in the house and give him ELQ someday. Lila warns
him not to substitute Michael for Jason, but he won't listen. (3/1)
- While Sonny talks with Mike, Carly fends off first AJ and then Edward. Bobbie
arrives to hear Edward threaten Carly, and she talks with her daughter about Sonny.
Later, Sonny comes to see Carly, asking for a compromise, but she's too scared
of the Quartermaines to make a move. Sonny ends up fighting with Edward and telling
Carly that she's made the wrong choice. Later, while planning for the baby's room,
Carly tells Lila that she's made her choice to stay with the Quartermaines, but
that she knows Sonny will fight her. (3/2)
- Carly gets a message from the hospital, and Edward opens it. He announces
to the family that the baby is indeed Sonny's. The family begins to squabble all
over again, but Edward insists that Carly belongs with them. As the family disperses,
Alan checks in with AJ, who says he's doing just fine. Meanwhile, Sonny's on the
phone with Jason. (3/3)
- Sonny shows up armed with the evidence Jason has against AJ. He demands that
the Qs let Carly and Michael leave with him, and privately tells AJ everything
he knows. He says that if AJ doesn't sign the divorce papers and the documents
giving Carly sole custody of Michael, he'll send AJ to prison. AJ lets Carly and
Michael leave, and the rest of the family is outraged. (3/3)
- Carly can't believe that she gets to leave. She calls for Michael and finally
speaks her mind, as Sonny tells off a few Qs himself. After Carly and Michael
are gone, AJ has to explain why he caved to Sonny's demands. They're appalled
and angry, and Edward fires AJ from the CEOship. (3/6)
- While Alan tires to reach out to his son, Edward changes his mind and fires
AJ completely from ELQ. Edward then offers the CEO job to Ned, but Ned turns him
down. (3/7)
- When Bobbie comes to visit Michael, Monica fills her in. Bobbie heads to Sonny's
to convince him to let Carly and Michael move in with her at the brownstone. (3/8)
- AJ talks with Lila, and he and Edward continue to blame each other for what
has happened to the family. (3/8)
- Meanwhile, Monica and Alan try to deal with what has happened at work, where
they're trying to head off a strike. When Tony hears the news, says that Sonny
is just what Carly deserves. (3/8)
- Juan dodges Taggert at Kelly's, but then Emily tells him what Elizabeth just
told her: Lucky might be alive. Emily's ecstatic, but Juan seems hesitant. Emily
asks him if he's jealous. He says no, but she tells him that she and Lucky were
just good friends. (3/8)
- AJ tells Monica that his attorney told him he could never get his son back
because of the evidence that Sonny has. He's angry at the thought of having to
ask permission to visit his son, and goes to see Carly to demand visitation. He
grows angry and demands his rings back, and she tells him that Jason gave them
to her. She continues, telling him that Jason was the one who got the proof against
him, and he grows angry and physically accosts her. Sonny stops him and throws
him out. (3/10)
- Emily and Juan share some time away from her troubles at home together at
Kelly's. They talk about Juan's singing career; he's not going to tell his father
about his plans until he knows Ned will let him sing. (3/13)
- AJ starts drinking again in front of his family as Carly agrees to go with
Sonny to the Dominican Republic to get her divorce. Monica goes up to talk with
Emily while Alan sits with AJ. Later, Emily tells Juan about her own past addiction.
(3/13)
- At L&B, Emily encourages Juan as he rehearses. She then asks Nikolas to listen
to Juan, but Juan refuses to sing in front of him and gets angry. Later, Emily
talks with Elizabeth. (3/14)
- Ned listens to Juan sing, and says that he would like to help with his career,
but that L&B does not have any funding for new artist right now. (3/15)
- A drunken AJ runs into Hannah and suggests that they sleep together to get
back at Sonny and Carly. (3/15)
- Ned stops AJ from ordering a drink at the Grill's bar. AJ tells Ned that he
was just playing as dirty as everybody else does, but Ned points out that he's
never risked anybody's life. AJ throws blame around, and taunts Ned about his
own parenting. When Ned puts the blame squarely at AJ's feet, AJ announces that
he's going to get his son back and leaves. (3/20)
- Later, Tony finds AJ in his office looking for Sonny's medical files. AJ wants
proof that Sonny is dangerous. He tells Tony that Carly has wrecked his life,
just as she wrecked Tony's before. Alan comes in and finds the two of them talking,
and AJ announces what he's doing. AJ leaves, rather than accept a ride home, and
Alan fills Tony in. Monica arrives, demanding to know what happened. Tony leaves
them alone, Alan tells her, and she insists that they have to stop AJ. He's out
of control. (3/20)
- The family argues about AJ when he acts out at breakfast. Later, AJ apologizes
to Hannah for his drunken behavior from before, though Taggert doesn't buy it.
He returns home and fights again with Monica. (3/22)
- Emily checks in at L&B, looking for Juan. She talks to Nikolas and Elizabeth
about Lucky. When Juan arrives, he tells Emily that he's written a song for her.
(3/22)
- Edward makes Carly an offer, but she sides with Sonny. (3/24)
- Emily and Juan want some time alone. Later, when a booking agent visits L&B,
Emily and Juan get her to listen to him sing, though Nikolas doesn't think it's
a good idea. Emily quickly becomes jealous, however, of the attention the agent
pays Juan. (3/28)
- Meanwhile, Edward and AJ argue when Carly's divorce papers arrive at the house
and AJ goes to the Grille for a drink. He runs into Ned and Tony. He refuses to
listen to either of them, and leaves. He runs into Hannah. (3/28)
- As Elizabeth continues to worry over Lucky, Ned tells Emily and Juan that
L&B has no money with which to support new artists. Nikolas says Eddie Maine's
return would bring in the money, but Ned rejects the idea. When Elizabeth suggests
that Sonny could back Juan, Emily refuses the idea. (3/29)
- As Monica and Alan try to deal with the nurses' strike, AJ publicly announces
his divorce over the hospital intercom, angering his parents. Alan still tries
to help, which irritates Monica. Kevin, who's come to deliver a message from the
ER because of the busy pager, talks to her about AJ. He also talks to Tony about
the possibility of an operation for his hand. Back at home, AJ rejects Edward's
plans to contest the divorce. (3/29)
- After Alan spends the night driving around looking for AJ, Monica tells AJ
that his actions are hurting Alan, but he refuses to hear it. Later, Monica calls
Alan, who talks to AJ himself, but gets nowhere. AJ insists that he feels better
than he has in a long time. Alan then goes a round with Edward, who turns around
and tells Lila that he's going to make ELQ into a major power by going after Jax.
(3/30)
- Meanwhile, Emily is at Kelly's talking things over with Tammy. She makes plans
with Juan, not wanting to go home. He assures her that things will be alright.
(3/30)
- Edward sets up an attack on one of Jax's holdings. After fighting with his
family some more, AJ heads to the Grill for a drink. When he sees Sonny and Carly
there together, he blows up at them, and when he lunges at Sonny, he knocks Carly
down instead. (3/31)
I. We Are Family (3/1)
Edward: "And I take it as a sign things are turning in our favor. Now,
the next thing to insure is that little Michael stays right here where he belongs,
because I know how much he means to you."
Lila: "Well, Michael doesn't have to live here for me to love him."
Edward: "Lila, he's our future. And I've been watching him closely. He is so alert
and he is possessed with a sterling intelligence. And what's more, he's loving.
You know what's ironic? He's so much more like Jason than A.J. And someday, I'm
just going to hand him the reins to E.L.Q."
Lila: "Oh, Edward, don't substitute Michael for Jason. It's not fair."
Edward: "Well, I'll be damned if I will lose Michael the way I lost Jason--not
to Carly, and certainly not to that hoodlum Corinthos. No, so help my god, Michael
is going to live here with the Quartermaines because we are his family."
II. Carly Considers the Two Evils (3/2)
Carly: "A.J., do you care about anything but your image?"
A.J.: "I used to care about you."
Carly: "Do you enjoy this? You like the way that we're living?"
A.J.: "Well, you know what? It--I don't know. It has its pluses. I have Michael,
the satisfaction of watching you squirm."
Carly: "Oh, yeah? That can go both ways, sweetheart."
A.J.: "Oh, please. You know what? You're trapped, babe. You know, you're like
a--I don't know--it's like a bug in a jar."
Carly: "Well, this little bug bites, so be very careful."
Edward: "My dear, you--you have a responsibility to this child you are carrying
not to allow yourself to be upset. Here, sit down right here."
Carly: "Well, tell that to your grandson."
Edward: "It was reckless of you to even engage him. When A.J. behaves badly, just
simply walk away."
Edward: "You know what I think we'll have to do? We'll have to make a set
of rules for you like we do for little Michael--'Don't tramp on the roses. Don't
pull the dog's tail. Don't harass a pregnant woman--any pregnant woman in this
house.'"
From this point on, we'd get hints of the miscarriage to come. What I like
is that here, even from Edward, we see that both Carly and AJ are held at fault
for their fighting.
Meanwhile, Carly continued to be flippant with Edward, smiling and popping
a strawberry in her mouth as she thanked him for something or other. She continued
to eat as Bobbie entered and faced off with Edward, which amused me for some reason.
People rarely eat, and this was Carly's way of saying that she was on the sidelines,
or that she didn't care, it seemed.
Carly: "And Sonny actually made me an omelet that wasn't poisoned or anything.
Can you believe that?"
Bobbie: "Why are you an idiot? Because Edward doesn't like it?"
Carly: "No, because Sonny--Sonny can't possibly be for real."
Carly: "You know, he cuddles up to me for a couple of months, gets real friendly.
Then suddenly, wham, I'm trash, and he gets his hands on my child."
Bobbie: "Honey, it's his child, too."
Carly: "Not if Edward works his magic."
Bobbie: "Honey, you've got a beautiful little boy upstairs, and you've got
another one on the way. Come on. Is life so really, totally awful?"
Carly: "Not when you put it that way."
Carly kissed her mama hello, then smiled at Bobbie's list of the good things
in her life--not the posed smile as with Edward, above, but a genuine smile. It
was nice to see her conversation with her mother not degenerate into a fight.
Carly: "Exactly. So, what, butter me up, be really sweet to me for a couple
of months, and then what? You going to cut me off? Meanwhile, the Quartermaines
get their hooks into Michael?"
Sonny: "Do yourself a favor--and the baby and Michael and me. Don't think so hard
because you can't even think straight. You know what I'm saying?"
Carly: "So I should let you think for me?"
Sonny: "Haven't we gone through this? For the baby. I will do whatever I have
to do."
Edward: "Thank you, Mr. Corinthos, for giving me the pleasure of having you arrested
and charged."
Sonny entered through the French doors, which I've noted before is the typical
entrance for people at odds with the family for some reason. Jason always came
in and out through those French doors; notably, when he left Michael, it was through
the front door. Emily sneaks in and out that way at times, and often after a fight
family members go outside by that door to get some fresh air.
Sonny: "What, you make it a habit of arresting board members who come to consult
the quarterlies?"
Edward: "Who do you think you're fooling? Did you mistake my restraining order
for a greeting card?"
Sonny: "Your restraining order?"
Edward: "Well, Carly's."
Edward: "Please inform Mr. Corinthos that I don't bluff."
Carly: "You're in violation of the restraining order."
Edward: "There. Was that plain enough for you?"
Sonny: "Hey. Carly--you just made a big mistake."
Carly didn't look at Sonny immediately when he entered, and she smiled at
Edward's correcting himself, seemingly willing to let Sonny and Edward fight it
out. But Sonny moved in close for her "choice," and Carly turned away to her decorating
book, still refusing to engage in a fight (she is capable, it seems, of avoidance
when it suits her fancy). Sonny finally left, slowly, and Edward shut the door
after him, turning to Carly as if to convince himself that she had chosen the
Qs. She wouldn't look up at Edward, either.
Edward: "You see how easy that was?"
Carly: "It wasn't so easy."
Edward: "Compared to losing one of your children, yes, my dear, it was."
Lila: "Your hands are trembling."
Carly: "Oh. Are they? That's just because I'm a mess. You're supposed to be radiant
when you're doing this, you know? But there's some unwritten law for me that just--it
says that I can't be pregnant and happy at the same time. Why is that? You have
any idea? Of course you do. It's no big mystery, huh? Poor judgment and bad birth
control. I love this baby, you know, and I love Michael. I just have to find a
way to make this work, Lila. I just have to."
Lila: "Then you've made your decision."
Carly: "Sonny's going to fight me. I know it."
We cut from this to Jason's phone call with the information about the arsonist.
I knew Lila was hopeful that Carly would stay with Michael, but I wondered if
she actually believed that Carly's "choice" was the right one.
Terry: "Oh, wow. What an episode. It was busy, and it was solid. There
was not a scene in it that I wanted to fast forward."
"Carly and Sonny crack my heart, too. I want to hug Carly so much. The poor
angel. AJ is being so snarky--I like him evil, myself. Edward is a teddy bear
with killer instincts, a fascinating combination. I buy him when he pets Chloe's
hand in the hospital and worries about her condition, when he buys a giant box
of chocolates for Lila for Valentine's Day, when he urges Carly to eat. I also
buy him when he reminds Carly that she could lose Michael in a heartbeat. He's
so cold. But he's so Edward."
"Anyway, I thought they were all terrific today. Only thing that could have
made it better would have been if they had worked Roy in somehow. But who's complaining?"
III. I Said We Are Family! (3/3)
Edward: "Does anyone object if I open Carly's personal correspondence?"
Alan: "Would that matter?"
Edward was already opening the envelope when he asked for objections, and
despite Alan's response, everyone in the room moved closer to see the results
as Edward read the contents.
Edward: "I was hoping against hope that it might be Jason's."
Alan: "Another sensitive moment for my dear father."
Monica: "And what about the baby? Nobody even wants it."
A.J.: "I do, if it keeps Michael away from Sonny."
Monica: "Well, any child deserves better than that."
A.J.: "Carly loves Michael. At least that much is true."
Monica: "Well, that's a very good thing because giving birth to babies is about
the only thing she is good at. First you, then Sonny. Now who's going to be next?
The gardener? The pool man? Reginald? Why don't we just make this a daycare center?"
A.J.: "I can control Carly."
Monica: "Is that how you want to spend your time?"
A.J.: "I'm getting what I want."
Carly: "That's what I told you from the beginning, so--"
Monica: "And you would never lie."
Carly: "Well, what I remember is that you're not going to let Michael go.
And since I'm not going to leave him, here we are. Just one big, happy family."
Carly: "And Carly loves it when you guys talk about her like she's not in
the room."
Monica: "Well, that's wishful thinking."
Monica: "Michael is not a child to you. He's a prize."
Edward: "He's the future of this family, Monica."
Monica: "And you want to turn him into Jason."
Monica: "This arrangement can't work. And you know it, don't you? You know
it, and you don't care. You are going to keep Michael in this house come hell
or high water."
Edward: "I don't apologize."
Monica: "Well, then I am putting you on notice. When this mess does blow up and
takes A.J. with it, which it will, I am going to spend every waking minute of
my life thinking of ways to make you regret it."
A.J.: "Yeah. I don't know, dad. Maybe I was just dreaming or maybe I was just
a fool, but I really believed that Carly and I would pull this off, that we would,
you know, learn to be comfortable with each other and live happily ever after
and, in time, fall in love and all that, you know?"
Alan: "That isn't expecting too much."
A.J.: "It is from Carly. You see, I finally learned that she never intended for
this marriage to work. You know, whatever her plan was, I'm sure it had something
to do with me ending up in--in an alley again, so to speak."
Alan: "You deserve so much more than this, A.J."
A.J.: "For the first time in my life, dad, I have the upper hand."
Alan: "There can't really be much satisfaction in that."
A.J.: "Oh, you'd be surprised. I have my son, my wife, my family. All in all,
I'm feeling pretty good."
