Rae Cummings and Tony Jones:

  • Rae convinces Tony to do all he can to be a surgeon again. He decides to have the surgery. (4/19)
  • Tony tells Bobbie that he's going to have the surgery. Later, she talks to Rae about the prospect of meeting her daughter for the first time. (4/20)
  • While Tony faces his surgery, Rae finally finds the bible with her family records. (4/21)
  • Rae phones home, then runs into the Quartermaines at the grill. She riles Monica into another fight with Alan after telling them about the lead she found in the bible, and he tells her about their marriage. (4/24)
  • As Tony recovers from his surgery, Rae tells him she's leaving, but won't say anything about her child's father. Later, she says goodbye to Alan, but stops herself before making some final comment to him on her way out. (4/25)

I. Tony Makes His Decision (4/19)

Rae: "A very sort of an unsung hero. I mean, don't you think? He's a remarkable Chief of Staff, and yet he doesn't bring any attention to himself."
Tony: "Well, you know, he sets a good example despite the occasional Quartermaine quirk."
Rae: "Yeah. They are an original crew, aren't they?"

Tony: "Uh-huh, Alan and Monica, it's known as love in the trenches."
Rae: "Yeah, well, every marriage has its ups and downs. It's just too bad that the kids are the ones to suffer. They--they have two, don't they?"
Tony: "Three."
Rae: "Three?"
Tony: "Each with more than their own set of problems."

Rae: "Monica--I don't know, she seemed a little ruthless. But Alan was compassionate and kind. Is he always like that?"
Tony: "Stop it."
Rae: "What?"
Tony: "What is this sudden interest in Alan here?"

Rae: "I'm just so preoccupied with parents and children and the dos and the don'ts. I don't know, I guess maybe I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to handle it if I ever do find her. I lost her once, Tony. I can't afford to lose her again."
Tony: "Rae, you are such a kind and loving woman that when you do find your daughter, I can't imagine that she wouldn't want to know you."
Rae: "You know what? If I do find her, it's because you helped me. Now, let me return the favor, ok?"
Tony: "Thanks, but I don't need anything."
Rae: "I'm about to put my foot in my mouth because I'm going to disagree with you. You're a surgeon, and you can't operate. I think I know why."

Tony: "You think I'm afraid of the procedure?"
Rae: "No, but I do think that you might be afraid of what happens afterwards. See, right now you can hide behind hope. But if you go ahead and take that plunge and it doesn't work, your life could go spiraling out of control, and you know it."

Rae: "So I guess the question is--"
Tony: "Will I be able to get out of my own way?"

Tony: "What if I can't, though? I mean, what if there's no medical reason why I can't function at the same level as I did before but I can't?"
Rae: "Hone how are you going to know that unless you take that chance?"

Tony: "Everything that you claim you owe me and now I owe you, and so we're all even, right?"
Rae: "Ok."
Tony: "Except maybe I'll owe you a little bit more."

II. Bobbie and Rae Chat About Reunions (4/20)

Tony: "I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much."
Bobbie: "Well, in that case, I'll get my hopes up for both of us."

Tony: "Yeah. Rae is looking for her daughter, and I took the liberty of suggesting that you might be able to give her some perspective on reconnecting with an adult child."

Bobbie: "Well, I think you're very smart to be looking for her yourself. I hired a private investigator and--well, he not only lied to me, but he took my money as well."
Rae: "I have been down that road. The lying and the swindling came from my own husband, unfortunately."

Bobbie: "When I first found Carly--actually, I should say when Carly found me, she felt that I had abandoned her. There's still this reflex in her that feels that she can't believe in me. She is always testing the relationship. And who knows, maybe she'd be that way even if I had raised her every day of her life. My daughter is not a restful person."
Rae: "She does love you. I was at Kelly's, the coffee shop, the other day when you and your daughter had a discussion."
Bobbie: "You can say it. We were fighting. That's not unusual."
Rae: "You know, after you left, I did strike up a conversation with her."
Bobbie: "Hmm. Well, I'm sure she gave you an earful."
Rae: "She was a little upset. But you know what? Everything she said, it was so clear how important you are to her and how much she wants you to love her."
Bobbie: "Carly can be exasperating, but I'm grateful every day for her presence in my life."
Rae: "You know what? Tony was right. I really needed to hear that."

Rae: "Bobbie, just one more thing. Carly's father--did he ever know about her?"
Bobbie: "No. The circumstances were impossible."
Rae: "Well, if you could tell him, would you do it?"
Bobbie: "Absolutely not."

Joan: "OK, today was one of those days when the temptation to thwack Bobbie a good one was overwhelming. In fact, THWACK!"

"So she is grateful every day that Carly is in her life, eh? I suppose her gratitude was expressed by blaming Carly for Roy's incarceration, and when she refused to take Carly in when she wanted out of her situation with Sonny it was gratitude that made her cut her daughter off without a second's hesitation. Eeesh!"

"The capper, of course, is Bobbie's answer to Rae about whether she would have told Carly's father about the baby. 'Absolutely not.' Strange, coming from the woman who was so insistent that Sonny had a right to know he was a father. So insistent that she totally disregarded a direct plea from her daughter to keep her confidence and told not only Sonny but Roy, too. Of course an anonymous John might be hard to find, but it makes one wonder just how anonymous he really was..."

III. To New Beginnings (4/21)

Tony: "To Rae Cummings, for her stubbornness and her persistence."
Rae: "Such endearing qualities, don't you think?"

Tony: "And a lot of people have urged me to have this surgery on my hand, but it took an old friend from the past to get through to me."

Rae: "You nervous?"
Tony: "Terrified."

Tony: "So, you think I'm going to chicken out, don't you?"
Rae: "No, don't. I just don't know very many people in Port Charles, so I haven't got anything better to do."
Tony: "Ouch."

Tony: "I--I want to thank you, though, no matter how this turns out, because I don't have to live with the what ifs now."
Rae: "That's right. Which is the same way I feel I about finding my daughter, you know."
Tony: "You're going to find her, though."
Rae: "Yeah. I just got to find that bible, Tony. I have to. I just know it's got the adoption information in it. I mean, it has to, doesn't it? It's a book of miracles, right?"

Tony: "I can do it on my own. I'm a grownup."
Rae: "I don't know if I believe that, but ok. Good luck. You know I'm going to be pulling for you."

Mr. Ruskin: "Would you mind giving this bible to dr. Jones?"
Rae: "No."
Mr. Ruskin: "I put a note in it, Psalm 90, to encourage him. It helped me a great deal during my convalescence."
Rae: "That's very sweet of you. I'll see that he gets it."
Mr. Ruskin: "He doesn't even have to worry about returning it. It's from the hospital cart. When he's done, tell him he can just pass it on to another patient."
Rae: "Yes, I'll be sure to tell him that. You take good care of yourself."
Mr. Ruskin: "Thank you so much."

Rae: "Oh, my god."

Terry updates these scenes:

"Rae and Tony are sharing a toast at the Port Charles Grille. She still hasn't combed her hair. He thanks her, repeatedly, for being the person who finally persuaded him to have surgery on his hand."

"Rae and Tony show up at the nurses' desk where, wonder of wonders, Bobbie is actually doing nurse-type stuff for a change. Bobbie gives Tony a get-well card from Lucas. Alexis shows up to talk to Bobbie, who tells her that Larkin is setting Roy up to be killed and begs the lawyer to find a way to get Roy released or transferred."

"Rae's back by Tony's side and he thanks her AGAIN. Argh. She wants to find the Bible with her adoption information, she reiterates. Tony leaves, and a patient named Mr. Ruskin is wheeled out of the elevator. The patient hands Rae a Bible to give to Tony. He tells her it came from the hospital cart, so she checks it out and, sure 'nuff, it's THE Bible."

And over on All My Children, Rae told her mother what she found in the bible: pages were ripped out, and there was a note from her ex-husband telling her to come back to Llanview.

Terry: "Is Rae going to be gone by week's end for good? I hope so. How is someone who doesn't watch AMC supposed to know that the page from the Bible was missing? Did they mention that on GH and I missed it? And I see that Amy was right, as I suspected, all along--the Rae/Eve connection was a red herring. Shouldn't folks start to rise up and scream at the contrivance of it all and refuse to play along? Rae-time, my foot."

Joan: "No, the missing pages weren't mentioned, and we've had a very incomplete background for this story."

"Daniel was, to be mild, not a nice person. He stole Rae's money, he slept with a 20-something girl now dead, and he colluded with a lawyer to conceal from Rae any leads that would help her find her child."

"She learned that information about her child might be had by locating the doctor who delivered the baby. He turned out to be dead, but he kept, unwisely, information about the many babies he had sold in a bible inside the desk that wound up in Port Charles."

Amy: "I believe Rae was only on for 3 weeks, so this should be just about it. I didn't buy that Eve was Rae's daughter for a minute:"

"1. It was too obvious."

"2. Rae was going to end up on some other show, and I don't think they're up to a 3-show crossover relationship for the extended future--Alan, Eve, Rae."

"3. It was much more interesting to bring up Eve's insecurities about family again, rather than give her a mother, in the build to her wedding (which I'm willing to bet won't happen--in fact, I'm willing to bet Lucy and Scott don't make it to the altar this time either. I'm almost willing to bet we're in for another partner swap, of sorts, but I'm not quite.). If Rachel is Grace or is related to Grace, that will also bring up Kevin's insecurities about being a father, etc., which we haven't seen in ages, and which I miss, quite frankly. It would be interesting to see Lucy being more able to help him as he revisits Grace, a bit, to my mind, and to see that shake Eve and Kevin up a bit. He's never told her that story, from what we've seen."

"The only thing that doesn't work out for me is why the tease on Alan possibly being the father. That's the part that could turn out to be true, because she could either not tell him, or Damon could crossover for like 1 week and take care of it, leaving Alan as an absentee father (which I don't like). Yadda yadda. But I suspect that was a tease too, not designed for anything interesting about Alan, but designed to get everybody who's been following Rae back on the boat to OLTL. Yuck."

"I will admit that I didn't mind Rae in execution as much as I thought. I enjoyed her scenes with Tony, and even Carly. And Kevin over on PC. But that was about the GH/PC people, not about Rae. At least she didn't try to 'counsel' anybody, etc. But the idea behind the Rae crossovers still irks me. And I'm grumpy that it wasn't Tammy who talked Tony into the surgery, so we could have some tension between her, Mike, and Tony."

Terry: "I agree, she was far less grating on GH/PC than she was on AMC or even, sadly, OLTL itself. What does that say about the writing teams, I wonder? Still, I assume the broad outlines of her story on each show were dictated from above--at least how she was related to whom and what she learned concerning her own story on each one. Maybe beyond that they were free to use her where they would, and GH wisely used her to good effect with Tony. (Although I don't buy that 'you talked me into the hand surgery' bit for one minute.)"

IV. Rae Says Goodbye (4/25)

Rae: "You look good."
Tony: "In my sleepwear?"
Alan: "She means for a post-op."

Tony: "Isn't it amazing that that bible was on Ruskin's table? I mean, fate is on your side."
Rae: "Ok. For that I'm going to bring you a gourmet brunch, all right? Which hand can you eat with?"
Tony: "Oh, I'm ambidextrous."
Rae: "Really?"
Tony: "It's a gift. It's like perfect pitch."
Rae: "Oh, come on."

Tony: "Ok. I suppose I'm not supposed to ask for specifics here--"
Rae: "Like who the father is, for instance? I have admired your restraint in all this."
Tony: "Well, would you still admire me if I had no restraint and wanted to know the details?"
Rae: "Well, I think I'll--I'll plead selective memory loss."
Tony: "Oh, that's a brain stem problem."
Rae: "Yes, and you can operate, you know, when you get your hand back."
Tony: "Yes. And when I do, I'd have to tell you that I owe you the thanks."
Rae: "I'll be in touch, you."
Tony: "You'd better. Bye, Gretel Rae."

Rae: "So, do I get to say good-bye to you, or should I write you a secret little note?"

Alan: "Ah, well, we're a work in progress."
Rae: "So is life."
Alan: "It was wonderful to see you again."
Rae: "Take good care of yourself, Alan."
Alan: "You, too."
Rae: "Alan? Never mind."
