Jax and Chloe:

  • Inadvertently helping Chloe dodge a protein shake with his arrival, Stefan surprises Jax with an offer to work together against Helena. Afterwards, Chloe and Jax talk to Alexis and Ned, respectively, about their troubles. At first, Jax thinks Ned's there to ask him to back off of Edward, but Ned's just worried about Jax and Chloe. When Chloe returns to the penthouse, however, they both hide their feelings again and make plans for that night. When Jax goes out, Chloe has another nightmare. (4/18)
  • Chloe goes to visit Lila while Jax phones Tracey Quartermaine to see if he can buy her stock in ELQ. Later, when Chloe confronts Jax with her suspicions, he admits that he's planning to take over ELQ and they argue. While he can easily separate business from personal, she's not convinced, even though she agrees to keep quiet. (4/19)
  • While Jax and Chloe prepare to go on their trip to Europe, Chloe has another nightmare about the music box. Meanwhile, Jax checks in with Tony, who tells him Chloe's being honest about her condition in their exams and that it'll be safe for her to travel. (4/21)
  • When Jax wakes her from a dream, Chloe tells him that she dreamed that Tony was holding the music box and she couldn't get away from him or the music. Ned and Alexis come to wish them bon voyage, and Chloe's ill at ease when she can't tell Ned about Jax's plans for ELQ. They agree to put it all aside and go on their trip. (4/24)
  • Jax and Chloe reach St. Petersburg and spend some time in the hotel room. He then surprises her with a gown, and they head out for a special night. (4/25)
  • During their romantic evening of dinner and dancing, Chloe stops cold when the orchestra begins to play the music from her dreams. (4/26)
  • Wanting to know more about the music box, Jax and Chloe go to a museum. She sees one that is almost like the one in her dreams, so they learn about its possible background. Later, Chloe admits that she's scared of her dreams, but Jax says that they may be trying to tell her something. (4/28)

I. An Offer He Can Refuse (4/18)

Jax: "What do you want?"
Stefan: "Would you be interested in taking revenge on Helena?"

Stefan: "Aren't you interested in revenge?"
Jax: "Well, it depends on the profit margin."

Jax: "You know, the problem with you, Stefan, is that you only care about Alexis when you need her."

Stefan: "You seem to be one of my mother's few weaknesses. Now, if we can exploit that--"

Jax: "Wow. Ok, so what's in it for me?"
Stefan: "Alexis will be safe once Helena is gone."
Jax: "Yeah, and also it would be a lot easier to raid the Cassadine coffers."
Stefan: "That's a chance I'm willing to take."

Ned would make the same criticism of Stefan later in the month: that Stefan cares for Alexis only when he needs her. I always appreciate Stefan's referring to Chloe as "Miss Morgan."

II. A Little Help from Our Friends (4/18)

Alexis: "This is much better than those protein shakes."
Chloe: "Oh, aren't those the worst?"
Alexis: "What does he put in those, anyway? Sand?"
Chloe: "I don't know. I have no idea."
Alexis: "I'm thinking maybe he runs through the trash cans in the park pulling things out and putting them in there. I'm just kidding."
Chloe: "Oh, I wouldn't put it past him."
Alexis: "He's driving you nuts, isn't he?"

Alexis: "Oh, love. The perfect defense."

Alexis: "Then you just keep trying something until it does."
Chloe: "If I don't go blind first. That might happen. God, it feels really good just to be realistic about it."
Alexis: "The odds are the medication will work. And that's realistic, too."
Chloe: "You know, really, I'm just worried about Jax."

Jax: "You know, Alexis doesn't live here anymore."

Ned: "I'm glad to see the old raider's back."
Jax: "But not if I go after Edward, right?"
Ned: "Hear me out. Causing trouble for ELQ is not going to fix Chloe's illness."
Jax: "I don't have time for this, Ned."
Ned: "Listen, Jax, we both are calling doctors. We're both waiting on hold at pharmaceutical companies. We're both searching the web. It's tough for me. I can only imagine what it's like for you."
Jax: "No, you can't."

Ned: "Would you just stop and think for one second why it is you're doing this?"
Jax: "You want to know what I'm doing, huh? Every time Chloe's head hurts, I pretend it doesn't, ok? Every time I catch her writing in that little journal of hers about how bad she's feeling, I can't ask any questions. I can't ask her about the medication. I can't ask her about the pain, the way she's feeling. I can't even make her a protein shake."
Ned: "Well, can you blame her? I mean, those things taste like dirt."
Jax: "Come on. Look, and then I--I try to help in any way, and she says that I am--that I am managing her illness. But isn't that what I'm supposed to be doing?"
Ned: "Oh, so you're just trying to protect each other--by hiding."
Jax: "Got a better idea? Ned, I wake up in the dead of night and I see Chloe sitting by the window looking at the view because she may never see it again. What do I say to her? Or she turns on all the lights in the whole place because she may never--she may never see light again. She wants to remember light. I mean--I see the pain in her eyes, and there's nothing that I can do about it. Can you tell me how I can watch the woman I love go blind?"
Ned: "If we can find the right medication--"
Jax: "Yeah, but what if we can't, ok? What if--what if it means--what if the pain means that the medication's not working? What do I say to her, Ned? What do I say to her, exactly, today, when she walks in the door?"
Ned: "I wish I knew."
Jax: "Yeah."
Ned: "For what it's worth, I think you got a lot of guts."

Chloe: "Jax can't make me get better, so he goes to work. He goes to this place, this zone. I know it well. I used to go there all the time."
Alexis: "But not now."
Chloe: "I can't. My head really hurts. I can't even admit to myself how much pain I'm in. I can't concentrate. And I can't tell Jax."
Alexis: "Well, that must be pretty lonely."
Chloe: "You know, actually, it's kind of a relief. He goes off to work and I can just have my headache. I don't have to be worried about how it affects him or I'd have to hide my pain and pretend it's not there."

Chloe: "Why does he have to go after Edward?"
Alexis: "Why don't you ask him?"
Chloe: "I can't. He is so happy. He's happier than I've ever seen him. I don't want to get in his way. Sometimes I just wish he would move on."
Alexis: "From the deal or from you?"
Chloe: "Sometimes I think Jax gets love and loyalty mixed up."
Alexis: "He's not going anywhere."
Chloe: "I was not supposed to go blind."

Alexis: "Jax loves you."
Chloe: "I know. This just isn't the happily ever after I'd imagined."

In an interesting coincidence, Chloe talks all about "happily ever after" on the same day when, over on Port Charles, Karen tells Eve that she's given up hope in "happily ever after."

Later in the episode, Chloe braced herself against her pain out in the hall before she came in, and then Jax watched her kind of wilt when she thought he wasn't looking, and then take her pills.

III. Jax Admits What He's Up To (4/19)

Jax: "So, Tracy, are you interested?"

Jax: "You're right. I'm not just after some inconsequential company. I'm preparing to take over ELQ."

Chloe: "Why didn't you tell me?"
Jax: "Because I didn't want to put you in the awkward position of knowing about the takeover before it happened."
Chloe: "My position is irrelevant. I want to know what you're doing this at all. Edward's only crime was to steal a small company you were planning to buy. You think it's fair to retaliate by taking over his family business?"
Jax: "It's got nothing to do with retaliation or being fair, for that matter, ok? It's--I've always wanted ELQ, ok? I've tried to take it over before, but it didn't work. Now the company's weak as it's faltering so. This couldn't be a better time."
Chloe: "I cannot believe I am hearing this. These people are my family. Ned is your friend. Does that not matter to you, even a little bit?"
Jax: "Chloe, Chloe, Chloe, you need to understand something about me, ok? I don't let my personal feelings intrude on my business."

Jax: "Edward's no innocent, ok? He knows the price of doing business."
Chloe: "Yeah, so did you and your family."
Jax: "Meaning what?"
Chloe: "Being aware of the rules or the potential consequences did not make it any easier when you lost your family business, for you or your parents. I mean, it was still devastating."

Chloe: "Then will you do it for me? Can you find some other mega-conglomerate to raid?"

Chloe: "I just need a little time to think, ok?"
Jax: "Yeah. Take all the time you need. But in the meantime, mum's the word, ok?"
Chloe: "Ok. I promise. But, Jax, you have to know that I'm not happy about this."
Jax: "I know. I know. Let's just agree to disagree on this one, ok?"

IV. To Russia With Love (4/21, 4/24)

Jax: "I'm taking you to Russia, Chloe--tonight, if you want to go."

On the same day, Carly plans a surprise for Sonny--a birthday cake at dinner. Somehow, her small plans move me much more than Jax's huge plans.

Chloe: "And keeping me away from Edward has no part in this?"
Jax: "Chloe, I know damn well that you could pick up the phone and call Edward whenever you wanted to, ok?"

Chloe: "The Quartermaines are my family, Jax."
Jax: "Chloe, you never even met them until a year ago."

Chloe: "Those letters taught me what I want in love. Those letters showed me what to look for. I didn't have your dad growing up. I had my dad. And those letters gave me hope. And I feel loyal to the Quartermaines, especially Lila and Edward."
Jax: "I understand that. I really do. But Edward knows we're together, ok? Do you see him being loyal to you by respecting my business dealings?"
Chloe: "He's not going after your family."
Jax: "He would if he could. Ok? This--this is like a poker game. Edward asked in. If you ask in, you've got to be willing to play the game. I'm not changing my plans for ELQ but this trip is up to you. And if you don't want to go, then we'll postpone it."

Chloe: "If we wait until our lives are perfect to take this trip, we are never going to go. So what I want to do is forget about the Quartermaines and forget about my illness, and I want us to concentrate on you and me."

Terry's update of this day's scenes:

"Meanwhile, Chloe enters Jax's apartment to discover a huge bouquet of flowers and a present--egad, they ARE Brenda-cizing her. Jax comes in to watch her reaction to the gift--a book on St. Petersburg."

"Chloe and Jax make plans to go to St. Petersburg. He wants to leave in four hours, but she suspects he's trying to keep her from talking to Edward about Jax's ELQ takeover plans. He insists the takeover is strictly business and she reminds him that the Qs are her family, so she feels loyal to them. Jax says Edward would be equally ruthless, and likens their business maneuvers to a poker game. Edward knew what he was in for when he 'asked in' to the game, by raiding Jax's company."

"Commercials happen, and then we get the lovebirds quickly setting aside their differences to start packing. As Chloe heads up the steps, I'm dismayed to see she's wearing cuffed peddle pushers with mules. Ick."

"Jax shows up at the hospital, in a pointless scene, to have Tony yet again assure him Chloe can safely travel despite her headaches. For this, he couldn't make a phone call?"

"Chloe is asleep on the couch, her packed bag and a note saying, 'I win' sitting on the floor. (She and Jax were racing to see who'd get ready first.) She has changed into an attractive sleeveless v-neck sweater, much more the look a romantic fashion designer ought to cultivate, in my opinion. She has a black and white dream with the usual tinkly music. In the dream, she sees Tony in the empty halls of the hospital holding a small music box."

"We cut to Helena making a phone call, with the music box sitting on the desk before her. She wants the callee to find out where Lucky is."

On the Next Day:

Chloe's dream about Tony with the music box continues. She begs him to stop it, and sinks to her knees in the GH corridor.

Jax: "Dreams have a way of following you."
Chloe: "I hate it when you're reasonable."

Jax: "Oh, so the dream wasn't about the night the car hit you."
Chloe: "No. No, it was actually--it was much more frightening. This is going to sound really weird, but there's this music box. It keeps reappearing in my dreams. It was in this dream the other night with the old diner, and then today it was at the nurses' station in the hospital. Tony Jones was walking toward me carrying it. And this time the music just kept getting louder and louder."
Jax: "What kind of music?"
Chloe: "I don't know. It's the same music every time. And it's some sort of classical piece that I know I've heard before. I just--I can't place it. And the funny thing is it's actually pretty. It's just that every time I hear it, I'm really afraid. I'm not sure why, but somehow the music seems threatening."

Chloe: "Do you think the threatening feeling I'm having when I'm dreaming is my fear of the illness?"

Alexis: "Well, make sure you spend one night at the ballet for me because I love the Russian ballet."
Ned: "Oh, honey, maybe you should go with them."
Chloe: "Uh--no."
Jax: "Oh, no."
Alexis: "All right, don't beg. I'm busy, anyway. I have a concert to prepare for."

When Alexis arrives and Jax and Chloe are kissing, she spins around away from them and then back, reminded, we assume, of her walking in on them before. Too cute.

Jax: "Look, the dealings that I have--the business dealings between Edward and me are not personal, ok?"
Chloe: "They are to me. And I'm sorry, but tonight, I just wanted to tell Ned about your plans to take over ELQ."

Jax: "You know, I--I shouldn't have told you about the takeover until it was a done deal. It really isn't fair to you."
Chloe: "It's not me I'm worried about."

Chloe: "I can forget anything that gets in the way of our trip--this beautiful gift that you've given to me."

Judy: "That music is starting to disturb my sleep too, so I hope someone finds that darn thing soon. (Tschaikovsky is not exactly a favorite of mine, which isn't helping matters any. *g*)"

"Tony was holding the music box in Chloe's latest dream, and Lucky was handling it the other day too, when he snuck in and saw my dear, darling Andreas preparing for Helena's arrival. I do hope this means that Tony is about to be involved in the story--any story, for that matter. While I realize that he probably will be the one to operate on Chloe, I hope he ends up with more to do than that."
