Sonny and Carly (cont.):
III. Bobbie Delivers Her Message and Asks for Sonny's Help (4/18)
Bobbie: "Agent Larkin is dirty. He set up Roy. And you're next."
Sonny: "I don't want you involved."
Bobbie: "Is that a yes or a no?"
Sonny: "No, that's a 'stay out of it,' Bobbie."
Bobbie: "Way too late for that."
Bobbie: "So can you go over to the prison? Can you see Roy? Could you try
and help?"
Sonny: "No."
Bobbie: "You know, Roy could have sent you to prison. But who's there now
instead? So, what do you plan to do about that? Because you told me you were going
to try to help."
Sonny: "You shouldn't visit him, either."
Bobbie: "Yeah, right."
Sonny: "Larkin's going to tag you for the go-between."
Bobbie: "I don't care."
Carly: "I moved back in--we did--in case you're interested."
Bobbie: "Good. I'm glad you were able to work things out."
Carly: "Oh. Get this, I actually thought you came over to see Michael and
I."
Bobbie: "Not now, Carly."
Carly: "What, I show up and you leave?"
Bobbie: "I'm going to see Roy."
Carly: "Oh. Oh. I wouldn't want to get in the way of that."
Carly: "What is this? Why did you tell her to be careful?"
Sonny: "Nothing for you to worry about."
Carly: "Is my mother in danger?"
Sonny: "Ok, I'm going to tell you this. But I want you to calm down. And I'm
only going to tell you this because it might affect you."
Sonny: "It's Larkin."
Carly: "The FBI slut's boyfriend?"
Sonny: "He's more dangerous than we thought."
Carly: "Did he hurt my mother?"
Carly: "Oh, so Bobbie's delivering messages from prison for Roy now?"
Sonny: "Well, you know what? I don't like the idea, either. But you know how--"
Carly: "I can't even believe he would put her in that situation. What if Larkin
comes after her?"
Sonny: "I'll make sure he won't. But you have to be careful, too."
Carly: "Now I'm in danger because of Roy?"
Sonny: "I don't want you going anywhere without Johnny."
Carly: "You got to make her stop seeing him. You have to."
Sonny: "If I could, I would. But, you know, I got somebody keeping an eye on her."
Carly: "Well, what if that's not enough? What about you? He can't touch you, right?"
Sonny: "Larkin's not going to hurt anybody--not you, not me, not your mother."
Sonny: "Thanks for dealing with this."
Johnny: "Yes, sir."
Sonny: "I know it isn't easy."
Sonny: "What's all this about A.J. in the park?"
Carly: "Johnny, you're a punk if you told on me."
Sonny: "Didn't I ask you to walk away from A.J.?"
Carly: "Bodyguards are really overrated, you know that?"
Sonny: "No, you know what? In the future, let Johnny take care of it."
Carly: "It was no big deal."
Sonny: "It could've been! A.J.'s starting to be a real problem."
Carly: "You know, A.J.'s a pain. But he's not really dangerous."
Sonny: "I won't have him hassling you."
Carly: "I got in his face."
Sonny: "Come on. A.J.'s responsible for what he does. He knocked you down at the
grill. He came in here, he grabbed you in my own home. Now he's coming after you
in the park with Johnny around? What are you talking about?"
Sonny: "I'm going to call them right now. You know what? This is good. I'm
tired of it! I'm tired of it."
Carly: "You asked me to stay away from him, and I didn't. And I'm sorry. Next
time, I--"
Sonny: "I can put him away so quick."
Carly: "Yeah, well, then my little boy's father--"
Sonny: "Oh, come on. He signed Michael away. Don't give me that, Carly."
Carly: "Yeah, well, if you send A.J. up the river, who's going to take care of
Michael?"
Sonny: "Up the what?"
Carly: "Up the river."
Sonny: "Up the--"
Carly: "You know, jail, prison."
Sonny: "Oh, you been watching those movies? 'Up the river.' What river? Where
is the river, Carly? Huh?"
Carly: "Are you making fun of me?"
Sonny: "No. A little bit, maybe."
Carly: "Anyway--"
Sonny: "Yeah?"
Carly: "If you send A.J. up the river, that's your best trump card against the
Quartermaines. Why would you play it now?"
Sonny: "Maybe I won't."
Carly: "Besides that, what about Lila? You send A.J. to prison, I mean, you're
going to break her heart."
Sonny: "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Nobody wants to hurt Lila. You know, my
main concern is to protect you. I'll do anything to keep you safe."
Carly: "I'm finally starting to get that."
IV. You Say It's Your Birthday? (4/20)
Sonny: "Oh, well, ok. You're the reason for everything, sweetheart."
Carly: "No, Sonny, that would be you."
Carly: "Mr. In control, Mr. Supersecretive, nobody can know anything about
my business. It's coffee, for god's sakes. You know, you and I are business partners."
Sonny: "Oh. Since when?"
Carly: "Since you told me that Michael owns half of everything."
Sonny: "Michael does."
Carly: "I am not trying to rob my son, Sonny. I'm offering to help you."
Sonny: "And I'm turning you down. You know, we got enough to worry about raising
two children. Involving you in any aspect of my business is a bad idea."
Carly: "And I'm going to spend a lot of your money."
Sonny: "Ok. Don't forget to get prenatal vitamins because you're running low."
Carly: "You're monitoring my vitamins now? Get therapy."
Mike: "Oh. Bad time?"
Carly: "About average."
Carly: "Mike, I have been meaning to send you a thank-you card. I'm really
sorry. That rocker was so beautiful."
Mike: "Hey, I'm glad you like it."
Carly: "Is that for me? You trying to butter me up? I have to tell you, it's working."
Mike: "Look, actually, it's for Michael. Michael, my son--Sonny. It's his birthday."
Carly: "He didn't mention it."
Mike: "Well, he never does. And he probably doesn't think that I remember, and--look,
I would appreciate it if you didn't say anything."
Carly: "Oh, that's no problem. In this house, I'm supposed to be seen and not
heard. Have fun."
Mike: "Well, maybe she assumes that you like her more than you used to, considering
the fact that you asked her to marry you."
Sonny: "Mike, Carly knows exactly why I want to marry her. What are you doing
here?"
Mike: "Wish you a happy birthday."
Mike: "Do I get credit for remembering the day?"
Sonny: "Sure thing."
Mike: "You're not going to open it?"
Sonny: "I got to make a ton of calls. I'll open it later."
Mike: "Hey, come on. It'll take, what, five seconds."
Sonny: "Why is it so important to you, Mike?"
Mike: "You're my son, it's your birthday, and I gave you a present. I mean, would
it kill you to open it?"
Mike: "It's for the baby's picture. See, you can have his initials or her initials
engraved once you decide on a name."
Sonny: "It's very nice."
Mike: "You hate it."
Sonny: "No, it's a frame, Mike. When the baby's--I'll put the baby's picture in
here someday."
Mike: "Look, Sonny, are we--are we ever going to get past this? I mean, I was
not around for most of your birthdays. And the ones that I did show up for, I
never had a present. I have one now. And it really isn't much, but it's about
your kid because, you see, I plan on being a hell of a lot better grandfather
than I ever was a father to you. If you let me."
Sonny: "How often have you followed through on your plans, Mike? You want to be
around, you want to love my kid, knock yourself out. But don't expect me to tell
him to count on you. When you're on your own, that's one thing. But when you expect
somebody to be there and you wake up one day and they're gone, it rips a hole
in you. And I'm not setting my child up for that kind of pain."
Mike: "Where do you think I'm going?"
Sonny: "Who knows? I mean, you know, Florida, Vegas, anywhere there's a poker
table--"
Mike: "Look, why would I leave now after all these years of facing your anger,
living with your attitude, your absolute inability to forgive? I screwed up, and
I disappointed you. And so will your child if you don't--"
Sonny: "No, Mike, I don't want to fight. I don't want to fight over this thing.
You know what I'm saying? I mean, we've gone over this over, over, over--I mean,
it's been finished for years."
Mike: "Ok."
Sonny: "Thanks for the present."
Mike: "Happy birthday."
Sonny threw the bow from the present in a drawer. He forgave Mike, I thought,
back when he thought he was leaving town forever. They made their peace. But since
he's come back, there's been no sign of that. They've moved backwards, not forwards.
And I keep wondering why that is. Mike hasn't done anything new to disappoint
Sonny; it's just changed back to the way it was. Maybe it's the writers needing
the tension between them, but we've had no reason for that, either.
I wonder, sometimes, if Sonny puts Mike away because of the prospect of his
child. That wouldn't account for everything since he's been back, but it makes
sense in terms of recent scenes. Does Sonny not want Mike around his kid? Doesn't
want Mike to disappoint his grandson the way he disappointed his son? Or is he
afraid that he'll be like Mike--or worse, like Deke--to his own child, and doesn't
want Mike around to remind him of that fear? I don't know, but I'd like more of
the Sonny/Mike stuff played out, so we can see the reasons for his resistance
to his father now that he's back in town.
Sonny: "Carly's it's--it's kind of not a good time."
Carly: "Well, how do you know if you haven't even seen the surprise? I'm trying
to make up here. You going to let me?"
Sonny: "Why are we making up? We weren't even fighting."
Carly: "Oh, we weren't?"
Sonny: "No."
Carly: "So, what I imagined that whole interaction where you were completely unreasonable
and denied me access to my son's inheritance?"
Sonny: "What do you know about coffee or the export-import laws or anything to
do with that?"
Carly: "Nothing. But I could learn."
Sonny: "Why would you want to do that?"
Carly: "Because. You know, you probably thought it was funny when I took Michael
and I left because you knew I wasn't going to get 10 blocks. I don't have a job.
I have no way of supporting my children."
Sonny: "I'm supporting them."
Carly: "That's right. You are. So all the power is in your hands. And I get to
live in your penthouse and I get to spend your money. And I say 'thank you very
much.' but what happens when I annoy you just a little too much and you toss me
out?"
Sonny: "Ok, you know, at the risk of raising a forbidden subject, why would I
want to marry you if I planned to ditch you?"
Carly: "I don't want to be an ornament. I was that at the Quartermaines'. Next
thing I know, you're going to ask me to join the charity guild."
Sonny: "No, you know what? You can do whatever you choose. Go back to nursing
school if you want."
Carly: "No--"
Sonny: "Open a business. You can start a coffee warehouse on the pier next to
me. But you know what? You're not going to work with me. You want to know why?
Because, A, I don't need help and, B, you don't know when to stop. You put yourself
in situations that are dangerous, and I won't allow that."
Carly: "There you go. You're ordering me around again."
Sonny: "Well, there you go pushing me when you shouldn't be pushing me."
Carly: "Did you mean what you said about starting a business for me?"
Sonny: "Do you want one?"
Carly: "I don't know. But it's a nice option to have."
Sonny: "I got to get to the warehouse."
Carly: "Do you want to see your surprise first?"
Sonny: "Sure. Why not?"
Carly: "Ta-da. It's the baby's coming home from the hospital outfit."
I suspect that, as much as he scolds Carly for getting in the middle of things,
Sonny has to respect her loyalty, her willingness to fight and defend herself
against AJ. That, to me, is why they couldn't stop laughing as they fought over
the patterns of ordering and pushing.
