Quick Takes
Death Becomes Him
by Teresa Leslie
Death becomes Stefan. That dip in the Port Charles harbor seems to have rejuvenated
his cajones. He's back to being "the man who knows things," as he follows his
mother's every move from afar. He oozes sex appeal as he lounges around in his
silky robe, Cassadine medallion gleaming on his chest. Guza even thoughtfully
provided him with a "bit of fluff," an exotic European bedmate who engaged his
body but not his heart, while providing someone for Stefan to talk to, so the
audience would know what he was thinking and doing without having to suffer through
him talking to himself.
I hope this dangerous and delightful Stefan is here to stay. I get a little
anxious when I hear him talking about obtaining a placebo for Chloe's medication,
especially when that bit of information is combined with rumors about his immediate
romantic future. Surely Bob Guza remembers how poorly the audience responded to
the Bat/Kat romance, which began with a gunshot and a "soul connection." That
story was developed during the Interregnum, while Guza was away from GH.
That story had me praying for Guza's return. He would never treat Stefan Cassadine,
his fabulous creation, in such a shoddy manner, I contended. He would never try
to sell violence or cruelty as a prelude to romance, I insisted. Come on, Bob,
don't let me down.
Roy and Carly: The Beginning (I hope) of a Beautiful Friendship
by Teresa Leslie
Here's an unequivocally positive quick take--I LOVE the friendship that is developing
between Roy and Carly. Not because it will make Bobbie crazy jealous and suspicious,
although that's a bonus. Not because I want something romantic to develop between
them, because I don't. No, I love this friendship for its own sake. Carly needs
a fellow like Roy in her life--a father figure who listens to her and accepts
her, who doesn't jump to the conclusion that she's "up to something" every time
she opens her mouth, who provides a shoulder to cry on without reminder her of
how often she seems to require a shoulder. Roy is supportive and kind to Carly,
and she needs someone like that in her tumultuous life. When she poured out her
heart to Roy not long ago, after Sonny had snarled at her, "everything that comes
out of your mouth is poison," he listened quietly. Bobbie, in that position, would
have undoubtedly interrupted Carly several times to a) chastise her daughter for
her remarks to Robin, oops, Elizabeth, b) tell Carly Sonny can do no wrong and
has put up with a lot from her, c) suggest that Carly has had similar problems
with Jason and Tony and has only herself to blame, and d) throw in a reminder
that this can not be used as an excuse to live in the brownstone one second longer.
Not Roy. He listened, with that quiet intense way of his that makes whoever is
speaking to him see that he is really listening, not just waiting for a chance
to start talking himself. He gave Carly a chance to put her pain into words.
Carly is a good friend for Roy's current needs, as well. She helped him shop
for lamps for his apartment without trying to force her own tastes on him or to
take over the process. She was a facilitator, not a dictator. Then they returned
to his apartment, to see that Bobbie, in her over-enthusiasm to help, had taken
all choice away from him and decorated the place to the gills, in her own taste.
Roy needs someone who doesn't share a past with him--the relationship with Bobbie
is built upon their past romance and making up for lost time; his relationship
with Hannah is shaped by the limited nature of their contact while she was growing
up and his guilt about the lies and compromises involved; until recently he was
living with old pal Laura and he still works with old pal Luke. Carly is someone
new in his life, who doesn't know him from "before." She also seems to understand
his need for independence and for a room of his own. She accepts him as he is,
and doesn't fuss over him as Bobbie and Hannah do. It's a nice change of pace,
I suspect. I hope this friendship continues to blossom. These two need each other,
and we viewers get to enjoy the fresh perspective on two of the most interesting
characters on GH.
