Letter from the Editor
by Amy McWilliams
Welcome to the General Hospital Review!
It's been a hard time for all of us--and all of you. Our best wishes go out
to each of our readers, especially those hardest hit by the events of September
11th.
We had most of the issue completed before this week, and I've appreciated the
distraction of finishing it up. We hope that you'll find our September issue a
welcome escape from reality as well. We're excited to have such a wide range of
topics in our collection of articles this month! Along with the review of August
on GH and PC, we have an overview of the summer on GH from
Terry's son, who we affectionately refer to as "Wonderpony." We also
have a pair of articles that follow up on past writings we've done on the Spencers
and Cassadines--such a large part of the story this summer. Joan revisits Helena
Cassadine now that Stavros is back in "A Study in Character," while
I come back to some discussions we've had about Luke and Laura in "Set Pieces."
Last but not least, our friend David has treated us to a stroll down memory lane
into the mid-80s on GH in his "Now and Then" piece on Celia Quartermaine
and Ginny Blake. In addition, we have a reader's note on last month's review,
as well as the regular selection of goodies in "Say Cheese!" and this
month's featured websites.
Thanks for reading, and enjoy!
GH in Review: And Another Thing About August...
by Arda Darakjian Clark
Arda reviews the month of August day by day (I think there are about four days
of Port Charles time in the month of August), as well as running down her major
complaints with the show right now. She'll finish the tail end of August, which
began a new day in PC, and the first half of September in the next issue; Terry's
slated to cover the remainder of the month.
Thanks go to the daily updates from the official
ABC website. Thanks also to everybody on the GH side of the Usenet
newsgroup rec.arts.tv.soaps.abc for their discussion of the show, and to the other
editors, whose discussion always informs my own opinions and makes the show so
much more fun to watch.
GH in Review
Turner revels in the ending to "Tainted Love" in his review of PC
in August. Taking examples from across the novella, as well as drawing comparisons
to "Time in a Bottle," "Fate," the early days of PC,
and the new arc, "Tempted," Turner explains why he loved the close of
this storyline so well.
PC in Review
As he takes over for his Tante Joan this month, Terry shares with us her son's
opinions of GH this summer. Wonderpony (our nickname for him) takes on
all the major storylines to prove that ABC doesn't always hit the demographic
at which they aim.
"And Another Thing..."
Our friend David stops by this month to take a stroll down memory lane. He
shares his love of two women in GH's past, Celia Quartermaine and Ginny
Blake, reminding us of storylines and characters from the mid-80s, and explains
his affection for that certain kind of soap woman, sorely lacking in today's writing.
Now and Then
Joan laments the changes she sees in her beloved Helena over the past months
in her column this month. From pit viper to nursemaid, the writing for Ms. Cassadine
has Joan seeing red--and not in a good way.
A Study in Character
I'm still woefully behind on the show (writing a dissertation does that to
you, and a flaky VCR doens't help), so my contribution goes back a few months
to some scenes set in Luke's apartment. With the focus on Luke and Laura, the
Spencers and Cassadines, over the entire course of this summer, however, I hope
my observations don't stand too far out of date.

Reader Mail
We love this kind of mail! A reader wrote in after reading our review of July
to let us know that his favorite scene(s) got left out, and shared why he loves
these two characters together. We agree!

Say Cheese!
This month has clips from the Bacchanalia, screen captures of Lynn Herring, scans
from Carly and Sonny's first wedding, and a range of characters in wallpaper.
Enjoy!

We're asking you for your favorite family members in our current polls. The family
on the spot this month is the Scorpios: who's your favorite Scorpio, past or present?

Featured Websites
First up is Rebecca Herbst's official site: Rebecca Herbst Online. The site
offers news, photos, a message board, and content that is exclusive to members
of the site--though there is more than enough material available to anyone who
visits. The design is attractive, colorful, and interactive (my only quibble is
that some pages don't quite fit in my maximized browser window). Though individual
photo credits aren't available (magazine and date), I always applaud sites who
give credit where credit is due, when at all possible.

Online
Our second page comes from the official Disney's California Adventure site.
Their ABC Soap Opera Bistro has been hosting weekend events featuring soap stars,
and this page includes photos and interviews with the various GH/PC
stars that have participated. You'll find Nancy Lee Grahan, Wally Kurth, Jackie
Zeman, Tamara Braun, Thorsten Kaye, and many more.
