The Quartermaines:
- Edward is anxious about Emily, and asks her if she's doing drugs again. She
tells him that she isn't, and Lila asks to speak with her alone. Edward leaves
them, and Emily tells her grandmother about finding Juan with Sherry. Later, Lila
smooths things over with Edward. (7/20)
I. Emily Has a Talk with Her Grandparents (7/20)
Edward: "Well, you're obedient, and you've been sticking very close to home,
and you haven't picked a fight with anyone in quite a while and--now, someone
has to pose the question--and since I seem to be the--the resident bad guy, I'll
ask. Are you taking drugs again?"
Lila: "I apologize for Edward. Tact has never been his strongest suit."
Emily: "That's ok."
Lila: "But he's right. Something is troubling you, dear. Would you like to tell
me what it is?"
Emily: "She's not even subtle about it. I don't understand. Am I missing something?
Is this, like, in-your-face come-on, like, attractive to guys?"
Lila: "Well, at times. It relieves them of responsibility."
Emily: "Well, I think it's--it's completely immature. You know? And I hate the
fact that Juan's really into it. I think that he actually kissed her. I mean,
I thought that a kiss was supposed to mean something. You know, I thought it was
supposed to be special."
Lila: "Did Juan apologize or explain?"
Emily: "Well, he tried to, but I wouldn't hear it. I kept pushing him away and
pushing him away. Then I started to feel bad, and I went to make up with him,
and--he--he was there with another girl. It was horrible. I mean, my--my heart
and my stomach just, like, fell to the ground, and I think they're still there."
Lila: "What did Juan have to say for himself?"
Emily: "Well, he said that I misunderstood. You know, and--and I misunderstood
and that--and that it wasn't what it looked like and that, like, minutes before
I got there he had stopped because he realized what he really felt for me."
Lila: "And did you forgive him?"
Emily: "I broke up with him. Grandmother, I thought that that was, like, the right
thing to do, you know? And now I don't know."
Lila: "Oh."
Emily: "I don't know. I can't--I can't sort out all the messages. I mean, I've
been with him for a whole year and--and I've learned to trust him and--that means
I should believe what he says, then, right? But if he tells me, like, some kind
of a big, fat lie, then what kind of idiot am I? I've seen him twice now with
girls, kissing them, doing things with them. Shouldn't that be, like, a sign or
something or, like, an omen of things to come?"
Lila: "Speak to Juan, dear. Tell him how you feel and see how he responds. Then
you'll have your answer."
Edward:
"I'll have her blood tested. That'll tell us what we need to know."
Lila: "Oh, Edward, stop it. Emily is not taking drugs."
Edward: "I'm sure that's what she told you. But you remember the first time it
started, we weren't even aware. We were clueless even when Alan started taking
drugs. And the only reason that we know that A.J. is drinking again is that he
has the courtesy to do it right up here in front so we can't help but see it.
Is that what you're waiting for? You're waiting for Emily to--to--to shoot up
heroin or smoke pot at the dinner table?"
Lila: "You're off base as usual, Edward. Emily is a teenager in love."
Edward: "Oh, so that's it, huh? Well, I should have known. You know, I never did
approve of that relationship from the very beginning. That Juan comes nowhere
near close to deserving our granddaughter."
Lila: "Isn't it comforting to know a man doesn't have to deserve you in order
for you to love him?"
