II. Evening Entertainments (9/8)
Chloe:
"I just find that for a person being imprisoned against his own will, you
are unbelievably calm."
Stefan: "I want to escape as badly as you do, but it defeats our purpose
to kill ourselves trying. Already I've begun to rely on your presence here. If
you had fallen, I'd have felt the loss."
Stefan: "Was I too protective earlier?"
Chloe: "There are situations that call for daring."
Stefan: "This may not be one of them."
Chloe: "What, this game or getting stuck on this island?"
Stefan: "A bit of patience might help with both."
Stefan:
"Instead of risking your life, why not use your gift to predict Helena's
next move?"
Chloe: "It's not a gift. It was an illness."
Chloe: "Oh, yeah, perfect--healthy and stuck in no man's land or sick
with a window into Helena's mind. If you were me, what would you wish for?"
Stefan: "Swift victory either way."
Chloe: "Actually, I'm too comfortable to move. So go for your swim.
But when you come back, I'll teach you gin rummy because I refuse to go to bed
before I've won something tonight."
Stefan: "Gin rummy it is. Shuffle the cards. I'll be back. And we'll see
who wins."
Joan:
"Stefan appears to have cast himself as rather dimmer and more wimpy than
Chloe in this island scenario. She is the woman of action, determined to find
a way off the island, he is the passive victim of Helena's will. It must make
a nice change for Chloe to be the one who makes plans, who pushes the envelope,
especially since she has just emerged, or is emerging from, the captivity of an
insidious tumor. I'm unsure how the medicine switch is going to take place, considering
anything Chloe ingests on the island will be automatically assumed to come from
Helena. Perhaps she will simply refuse meds, in that case, but Stefan can still
maintain, if he wishes, the wimpy facade and keep his figurative skirts clean."
Amy:"I thought Stefan would have had the meds switched already,
back in PC. Didn't he have some minion find out where she kept her meds? I can't
remember."
"I have to say that I actually enjoyed the bit about chess (duh) and gin
rummy, etc. I haven't liked Chloe so well...well, ever. And I won't mind Stefan
being pleasantly surprised. I'm not saying I'm sold on this thing yet, but the
early scenes aren't awful."
Arda: "I'm finding Chloe much more tolerable too. I hadn't seen
most of last week's episodes, but I sat up last night and watched them all. I
like her so much more when she's not being cheery. I mean, she said 'damn' and
'hell' in damn near the same sentence. She's getting mad and I like it."
Joan: "Yes, I may have just said it before, but I like Chloe in
her Action Girl persona. Jax seemed to infantalize his women, all except Alexis,
of course. Both Brenda and Chloe wound up being carried around by him, and he
usually was required to play tall, thin Genie and make all their wishes come true.
As I noted before, Stefan seems deliberately to be muting his power in order to
pose as Helena's captive, leaving Chloe to step up to he plate. She beats the
bushes, she scales cliffs. It's refreshing. Even when he teaches her chess, she
counters by proposing gin, a game at which she is confident she can best him."
Amy: "When people were questioning those opening scenes of her
looking around the room, etc., I thought she was actually looking to see if she
was in the hotel in Rome--looking to see if her stuff was there, and it was. After
all, she was packed, having just come to Jax and just called to go on to Rome.
I assumed it was her stuff."
"Now the question is, does she always pack climbing shoes to follow her
fiancé across the world as he searches for his supposedly dead wife?"
