I. Hannah Meets with Edward (7/24)
Edward: "And find some way to unload that ridiculous dot-com. That thing is
cursed."
Edward: "Of course. I remember from the Nurses' Ball. I also remember that you
helped drag my sorry excuse for a grandson home one night. And if I didn't thank
you, it was probably intentional. And I also know that you're a federal agent.
So why don't we just cut to the chase and you tell me what A.J. has done now,
hmm?"
Hannah: "I'm not sure if you realize--he really needs his family's support.
And if you, especially, would reach out to him, I believe it would save his life."
Edward: "Oh, I'm sure you mean well, miss Scott. And it's kind of you, if
dangerous, to take on A.J. as a friend. But let me give you the benefit of my
lengthy, miserable experience with the family lush. He can't be saved."
Hannah: "So you don't care if he kills himself?"
Edward: "After years of this, one becomes detached."
Edward: "I don't drive drunk through the streets, and I don't sell off the
family business to pirates and do a lot of other things that might surprise you.
Now, if you think that he is redeemable, you have not watched him try to throw
himself into every abyss that he can find. A.J. drinks to excess, and he drives
drunk, and he robs his brother of his mind. You cross A.J., and he will set fire
to your property, and he will throw you down the stairs. And if an unborn child
happens to die in the process, all that matters to A.J. is that the blame falls
somewhere away from him. 'It's not my fault'--that's been the mantra that he has
spewed his entire life. Now, my grandson is hopeless. And I have--I've come to
live with it."
Hannah: "You've come to live with it, or you've been saying it all along? Sir,
you expect a grandson to be hopeless, and he will comply."
Edward: "And you expect him to be wise and thoughtful and capable? Oh, young lady,
you are in for a real disappoint."
Hannah: "Have you ever not thought of A.J. as a loser?"
Edward: "This family has loved A.J. with the patience of saints. His parents would
rather--would rather forgive and forget than to do the hard work of facing the
truth. So they go on just in their blind faith that magically, overnight, their
son's basic character flaws will disappear. A.J. does not face his responsibilities.
He never has, and he never will."
Hannah: "With all due respect, sir, but A.J.'s biggest character flaw is you."
Edward: "Oh. He already has you seeing him as the victim. Well, my, that was fast."
Hannah: "Not just any victim. Yours."
Hannah:
"Something wrong?"
A.J.: "My business with my family is between me and them don't ever, ever put
yourself in the middle of it again."
A.J.: "You know what I need. You need the same thing, and it terrifies you.
Every time we're around each other, there's an electric current. The day gets
a little better, a little more interesting. Whatever you say, you feel it, even
though I'm a drunk whose lifestyle frightens you. Maybe the reason you went to
see my grandfather wasn't to rescue me. Hmm? It would protect you from your own
feelings if they locked me in back yard somehow. Well, I'm sorry, Hannah. My family
can't keep you safe. See you around."
Hannah: "I've been busy interfering with A.J.'s life, and I don't know why
I can't just sit back and watch him self-destruct."
