General Hospital Review

Kevin and Lucy continued to rekindle the "magic" of their past relationship, finally realizing that they were meant to be, and that there's a connection that'll never be broken. Well, as we all know, 'never' in soap land means next week. Fans everywhere are still wondering where the grief Kevin felt for Eve went. Did they have a funeral for either Eve or Ian? Many questions mounted, though answers were hard to come by. Viewers like me kept tuning in, though. Thinking--no better yet, hoping--that all of the loose ends would be tied up at the end. I think we're all still waiting....

In the meantime, Eve and Ian woke up in a dungeon and found themselves kidnapped by Ian's nemesis, Jordan Harris. A pretty realistic looking prison was the backdrop for Ian to finally explain the meaning behind his thirteen-bead African bracelet he's been stylishly sporting since his arrival in PC. Thorsten Kaye, who portrays Ian, had every PC viewer that day sobbing uncontrollably, empathizing as though we too felt the pain of those thirteen children he watched die as the medicine he'd promised them was hijacked by Harris. We never knew why Harris did it, just that we hated him for it, regardless of his motives. And as Eve and Ian worked tirelessly (well, okay, a fraction of what it would really take to cure someone of a life threatening disease, but again I digress) they grew closer--closer still once Ian found out about Eve's colorful past as an escort. Once again, we all melted like butter when Ian justified her experience as a badge of honor, transforming her past from seedy to one of dignity. And he had us believing it too!

Ian's mission was to get Eve out of there safely, to make good on his promise to do so. After all, he is the hero where Eve is concerned. Eve likewise bargained with her virtue to ensure that Ian would recover from his self-induced poison-stupor, thanks to ingesting the rat poison to stop Harris from hurting Eve. It was this event that brought us all together hoping Ian would pull through, and we wept with Eve as she realized that she needed him, regardless of what she'd been saying all along. Now even the strongest of cynics had a vested interest in them as a couple. So by the time the infamous Christmas scene came along, we were hooked. There wasn't a dry eye on any PC viewer's face, anywhere. To have Ian bestow his prized thirteen-bead bracelet to Eve, knowing he was giving his life for hers crushed us all. What a marvelous episode, with wonderful acting and beautiful emotion--kudos to Kaye and Julie Pinson for their wonderful chemistry and acting craftsmanship. For one episode, we all joined together and silently observed in our home, cubicle, or office and cared deeply for these two characters.

Eve and Ian finally escaped Harris's grasp only to find themselves ill-prepared to negotiate the cold winter snows between them and safety. And as is only possible in soap-land, they happened on a cabin in the nick of time where they could thaw, determine locale, and develop a rescue strategy. In the wood-burning coziness of their adopted bungalow, the three little words Eve and Ian fans have been pasted to their television sets for months to hear finally came. And boy, did they ever come in style. A memorable, steamy, not soon-to-be-forgotten intimate moment involving Eve's tummy will have Thorsten Kaye fans swooning for months to come, and moreover keep 'em super-glued to their televisions for an encore even longer. Then to hear a man say "no" to making love to a woman he loves because he wants her "for always...not just this moment in time" put us all over the edge. How phenomenal was that, huh? Realizing each had found their destined soul mate, Eve pledged to tell Kevin the truth, freeing herself to live happily ever after with Ian (of course, who wouldn't?). But as is usually the case, things don't always work out as soap characters intend. In rushing back to Ian after finding Kevin absent from the Lighthouse, a runaway driver (a new character, Arianna, with her own set of dramatic problems) mowed poor Eve over. Eve never saw it coming. But PC viewers saw amnesia written all over the next few weeks, prolonging the Eve and Ian love story, testing the merits of their soul mate vow as well as the patience of their fans. But "Fate" had us all tuning in religiously.

To add insult to injury, Kevin's seeming absence from the Lighthouse was due to his evening tryst with Lucy on the living room floor. Yes, you read that correctly. Mere weeks after learning of his wife's death, Kevin decreed his everlasting love and unbreakable connection to Lucy and chose to consummate their spiritual relationship right then and there. We can all still see that chenille throw wrapped strategically around Lucy's body parts when the knock at the door came at an inopportune moment and Kevin chose to ignore the unexpected visitor. So needless to say, when Kevin learned of Eve's accident outside, the guilt hit him like a 2x4 plummeting from space. Not only was he just shagging another woman (Lucy no less) mere days after Eve's presumed death, but then his not answering the door because of the same reason, put a whole world of hurt onto Kevin. Well deserved, if I may say so myself.

And so "Deception" begins, as each character is now thrust back into reality, forced to choose to do the right thing or follow their passion, their desire. The struggles began with Eve's selective memory loss, a ridiculous and obvious plot device by all PC fan accounts, Lucy's belief that Kevin will do the right thing, Kevin actually trying to forget what happened between he and Lucy, Eve wanting to remember yet afraid of what she is remembering or fantasizing, and Ian once again trying to do the right thing in letting Eve remember on her own. Each was doing what they "thought" was the right thing, with no regard for what was really happening within each of them. Eve and Kevin consumed themselves with a vow renewal ceremony. Ian occupied himself trying to save Arianna (lets not get started on this story) from her family, hiding from his feelings about Eve. Lucy tried to move on from Kevin, but failed miserably. And so the house of cards began to crumble, as did the patience of PC viewers once again. But we do love angst, don't we?

Will Kevin and Eve renew their wedding vows? Not one PC fan hopes that'll happen. Will Ian finally fess up to Eve, as per Joe's urging? Will Eve go through with the vow ceremony when deep down she feels it isn't right, or will she listen to Karen? Four honorable people essentially caught up in situations that they'd like to change. Many good questions, and each of us will have to wait for "Destiny" to provide us the answers we seek.
