From the moment she joined the cast of General Hospital, fans of Nancy
Lee Grahn have been clamoring to see her in a real relationship. Those who remembered
her as the spectacular Julia of Santa Barbara longed for a reprise of a
Julia-Mason-ic coupling--a titanic love match heavy on wit, conflict, and steam.
Even to those who had never seen Grahn before, her talent shone so brightly that
she quickly became the standard-bearer for smart-girl power, and on soaps, the
reward for fan approval of that magnitude is a front burner, sizzling-hot romance.
So why has Alexis Davis, a.k.a. Natasha, been living la vida solo for most
of her tenure on GH? It's a mystery. Her on-again, off-again romance with
Ned Quartermaine was lukewarm at best, and her soi-disant marriage to Jax was
sexless and, despite some vigorous fan drum-beating, doomed from the start.
The trouble with Alexis and Ned, for me at least, was a consistent lack of
heat. Wally Kurth is cute, yes, but I've never thought he generated much sex appeal.
With NLG, as she is universally known, he was intriguing, often touching, nearly
always endearing, frequently exasperating, but seldom if ever combustible. With
Ingo she was all of that and fun to boot, but still no fire down below.
Grahn is beautiful and talented, but in some ways her intelligence has canceled
out her sexuality. What's the matter with this picture? Why can't a smart, funny,
elegant lawyer get laid in Port Charles? Is she perhaps intrinsically sexless?
Well, hardly. Not if this week's dream of Sonny can be submitted in court.
I really don't know whether I want Alexis and Sonny together for real, but
in the dream world, they are, simply, hothothot. With Sonny, Alexis's jittery
neuroses somehow translate to a sexual itchiness that he could very well scratch.
The trouble is, it's not a healthy itch, and a potentially disastrous scratch.
But in dreams? Zowie! So if asleep Alexis is a sexual contender, here's hoping
the powers that be wake this sleeping beauty and give her someone to keep her
up at night.
