The Week in Review: May 4 - May 8 This was a good week. I absolutely enjoyed Brenda and Jason surviving the wilderness together, and everything else was heating up too. The scene that stole the show for me, however, was the Alan and Emily scene on Friday that prompted Emily to take Michael away from the Q house. There was some repetition--the rescue scenes stand out as the best example--but it wasn't too bad. And even smaller scenes, like Bobbie and Carly's and Jax retelling the Brenda story to Jerry, were very well done. And of course let's not forget Luke and Alexis--fun! I. The Spencers Since I put them under the Cassadine header last time, I'll continue Luke and Alexis's conversation here with the Spencers. A. Luke and Alexis Luke: "Unless I'm wrong--and stranger things have happened, although rarely--this is your first rodeo. You've never planned a murder before." Luke: "The dead stay with you, Alexis, particularly if you push 'em there." Luke: "Personally, I rest very easily with dead Cassadines on my conscience." Alexis: "I will argue my self-defense with a clear conscience." Luke: "No, hold it right there. If we're gonna do this, let's get one thing straight. If I plan it, and we do it right, you ain't gonna get caught." Alexis: "But we have to be prepared for the possibility, now don't we." Luke: "If we do this? Give me the cold mind of Alexis and not the wounded heart of Natasha." Alexis: "Now see, I've never told that to anyone." Luke: "Thank you. You gotta be careful, though. Maybe you're starting to trust me. That's a commitment, and we'll need that." Alexis: "You going to be my partner in crime?" Luke: "Crime? No, baby. Your partner in hope. We just might make a very good team." Alexis: "It's a question of trust." Luke: "So now you don't trust me?" Alexis: "No. You don't trust me." Luke: "Well, I'm making the effort." Alexis: "And it's an effort, isn't it. See, you don't have faith in anyone but yourself. So why should I have faith in you?" Luke: "What the hell are you talkin' about, woman?" Luke: "I want her dead, Alexis. It's my heart's fondest wish. And yours too. And what I'm offering you is my considerable experience in making these kinds of dreams come true." Alexis: "We have to make it look like an accident." Luke: "Ya. Right. An ugly, bloody, nasty, fatal accident." On Monday, Luke was entertained to realize that she was one of the few Cassadines who had not planned a murder. But Alexis assured him that she was determined to kill Helena so that she could be safe again. Luke cautioned her to be sure, and she said again that she was. Throughout the scene they went back and forth; he wasn't sure about her and then she wasn't sure about him. But in the end, they agreed. This was not only for her, but also for Nikolas. She's thought out the consequences, and would argue self-defense. Luke reminded her that if they did this right, they wouldn't get caught. She then talked about Helena's treatment of her and how she had lost Ned because of defending Tony (he already knew to press that button--already knew that they were an item, or had been). Luke teased that she was beginning to trust him, and Alexis agreed that she should watch that tendency. She asked how she could know that Luke wouldn't use her as a fall gal, and he told her that they both wanted the same thing. They would make it look like an accident. These two have a certain rapport, but they have never found loyalty or trust. This is a marriage of convenience, so to speak, and I don't think Alexis would ever have agreed to do anything with Luke but this very extreme measure. They have formed a still tentative alliance, and I found the talk of trust interesting. It was left very clear that they both know they were at some risk here, especially Alexis. And their partnership went only as far as this murder. And I was convinced that one or the other of them would end up adding a little something into the mix--I thought that it would be delicious if they both did! But I was thrilled to see them together, because I knew that they would be great fun to watch no matter what happened. Luke: "But it gets 'em every time." Alexis: "Maybe it was the blood." Luke: "Ya, it could be. Biodegradable, hypoallergenic, not tested on animals, and it won't stain khaki." Alexis: "You're funny really. It's really very amusing. Don't you think it's about time we began making plans? Stefan: "I want to start making plans to formally announce our engagement." Kat: "You mean send out cards?" Stefan: "Yes. We'll have a celebration." Luke: "Alright, we know Helena's death has to look like an accident so let's decide where the accident occurs." Kat: "How 'bout here? We have the room. I think it'd be very exciting." Alexis: "I don't want this dragging on forever, Luke. We need to set a date." Stefan: "Then it's set. The celebration will be here at Wyndemere on the 22nd day of May." Luke: "With Helena, there's gonna be a lot of suspicion that it was murder, so the accident has to be real. It has to look police proof." Alexis: "Any ideas?" Luke: "Ya. Put a whole lotta people around when it happens." Kat: "I was thinking immediate family, maybe a few close friends?" Stefan: "Ah, out of the question. It will be an enormous gathering. As many people as we can crowd inside these walls." Kat: "I can't believe this. Stefan Cassadine wants to open his doors to the whole town?" Alexis: "If there's people around, what's going to keep them from recognizing us?" Luke: "Disguises. Foolproof way to hide in plain sight and no one will suspect us." Kat: "A masked ball? How come?" Stefan: "Nikolas?" Nikolas: "Uh, it's a...it's a family tradition to celebrate engagements with a Bacchanalia." Kat: "Sounds decadent." Stefan: "It can be. It's an evening of mystery and excitement, unlimited food and drink, with a healthy share of romance." Kat: "Alright. A Bacchanalia it is, then. Now what about the guest list?" Stefan: "You simply invite everyone you know. Nikolas and I will do the same." Kat: "What about your mother?" Luke: "Ok. We got the basics covered. Now all we need is...opportunity." Stefan: "It's tradition to invite all family members to meet the new bride. My mother will hate the idea. So of course we'll include her." Luke: "You better get movin'. We shouldn't be seen together." Alexis: "I agree. But before I go, I have one request." Nik: "Well, I have some reading to do before my afternoon lessons, so, once again, congratulations to you both." Stefan: "Thank you." Kat: "Thank you. Stefan, the idea of a masked ball is very exciting. But, in light of your relationship, do you really think inviting your mother is wise?" Stefan: "Perhaps not. But it will be worth it just to see the look on her face." Alexis: "I want to see the look on Helena's face when she realizes what we're about to do." Luke: "Why?" Alexis: "So she'll know I've exacted my revenge." Luke: "And what is your revenge for, again?" Alexis: "For killing my mother." On Wednesday, Alexis waited for Luke on the docks, obviously impatient. He stumbled onto the scene, clutching the knife in his stomach and groaning that she should run before Helena got her too. Alexis hesitated, but then called 911 on her cell phone. Luke took the phone and told the operator that it was a false alarm. It was a fake knife; he was just testing her performance under pressure. They turned for her irritation at him to their plans, and we had one of those lovely intercut scenes alternating between their conversation and Kathy and Stefan talking about their engagement party--a masked ball. Too convenient. But it also sounds fun! At the end of Wednesday, Nikolas passed Luke on the docks and told him that there would be an engagement party at Wyndemere on the 22nd--and that he was so not invited it wasn't funny. And the wheels in Luke's head kept on turning.... B. Lucky and Lizzie Lucky and Lizzie were still at the Grill on Monday. They paged the ex Ms. Murty to find out which employee she was. Nikolas and Robin left--Nik told them not to get the chalky chocolate mouse, and Lucky asked the waiter if it was chalky, mocking Nikolas's "expertise." Crack me up. Nikolas had paid for the meal, and Liz told Lucky that they were just going to be thankful. But still, what was the point of this comparison of brothers at the Grill? Contrived. On Wednesday, Lucky encouraged Liz, who stopped her and asked for her help. She turned them down. Lucky stopped her and asked about the domestic violence call, but that made her clam up even more. Then Lizzie told her briefly what was going on, and the woman said that she was sympathetic but wouldn't get involved. Liz was disappointed, but Lucky decided they were on the right track and said they'd get there some other way. Liz: "What's your mother like?" Lucky: "Um...I guess I'd have to say I don't know. People take to her right away. When ya talk to her, um, it's like she understands everything. She bowls you over. She impresses the hell outta ya. Cause everything she says sounds so...true and right...even though a lot of it isn't. I had a...a brother. My whole life I didn't know about it. Until he showed up and got in my face. You'd think she coulda mentioned it. See, she makes you feel so important. She makes you feel like the most important thing in the world. But see, you're not. Cause the most important things? Nah, see, those things she doesn't talk about unless she has to." Lucky: "Maybe it's because she's talked herself out of knowing." On Thursday, Lucky climbed through the window into Lizzie's room while she brought up brownies. They discussed the rapist again, and Liz said that she was tired of being afraid of him. He cautioned her not to overcompensate and focus too much on revenge. After all, revenge was his dad's way, and how did he know it was right? Liz said she sometimes thought that they were not like other people. The only person she can stand, really, is Lucky. He told her that he wasn't like other people but she was ok. Liz asked about his mom. Lucky said that she always affected people positively, but that he had learned to see what she hid behind her truthful sounding words. Liz said that Laura must understand something that she never would, if she could get over this thing and even marry her rapist. Lucky asked her if she could do that. She reminded him that the two situations were different, and that she didn't know her rapist. But even so, she has to admit that she can't imagine it. She can barely imagine not hating him all the time. She regretted screwing up her case by not going to the police right away. She's desperate to do something to make up for it, and decided that she should trap him (this from the girl who could barely speak the last time she saw him?). Lucky refused, and reminded her that they didn't have conclusive proof that it was Murty. She went to bed, and when she had nightmares, he held her until she fell asleep again. II. The Stranded and the Kidnapped I'm afraid this will be a huge category, but so many of the families and characters are grouped together, crossing from one scene to the other, it'll just make more sense if I keep the storyline together, rather than the families. I'll give you lots of headers along the way so you can find your faves. A. The Jacks On Monday, Jerry found Bobbie at Kelly's diner and laid on the charm. She told him that she knew no information that he wanted while he told her that he was impressed by her varied taste in men. He pushed her to go out with him, and she refused. But methinks she was playing hard to get, and it was fun to see. A nice distraction, that one. But Jerry got a call from Jax that the plane had gone off radar and had to leave. He joined Ned and Jax and they started the search. Actually, Jax started the search when he grew tired of waiting for more news. B. The Quartermaines Meanwhile, Monica had an awkward birthday party on Monday, as Alan dumped her presents in the floor and the family tried to make light of it. It turned from awkward to bad when Bobbie arrived with the news of Brenda and Jason; Ned called at the same time with the update. Edward called the governor while Bobbie called Michael's nanny. AJ, meanwhile, comforted Emily. Alan...all together now...popped pills. Later, Edward took Monica aside and tried to convince her that this was the time to move on Michael, and she couldn't believe that he was thinking of that when they didn't know if her son was dead or alive. C. Jax and Brenda Brenda: "We're not going down; the pilot said that we're going to stop." Jason: "Ya we will, one way or the other." Brenda: "Remind me next time not to pack you." The plane had indeed gone down. They continued to fight on the way down, crack me up, about whether or not they were actually going to hit. Jason was right. They hit. After a period where they are both unconscious, Brenda woke up and then roused Jason as water started to come slowly through the plane door. Jason attempted to free his leg out from under his chair (it had overturned, throwing him out and landing on him, and I wondered why it wasn't bolted down). While he was busy with that, Brenda checked on the pilot. He was dead, but she had found a bag o' stuff that could be helpful. Then they fought over carrying that bag with them (I hate to say it, but it reminded me of Luke and Laura in the plane fighting over her carpet bag. I was glad they were in the water so Jason couldn't send her after it.). Brenda had to help Jason get his leg out, and then he surveyed the situation and told her that they would have to swim for it. She came up later than he did, but they both made it to the surface. I just rolled my eyes as the script imitated "Titanic," with the difference that Brenda and Jason fit up on the airplane debris. I believe the phrase is "Puh-lease." Jason insisted that they should paddle, not only on the chance that they would get to land (surely he could tell that they weren't in the ocean, so they might just reach it), but because it would keep them warm. D. Robin On Tuesday, Robin met Nik for breakfast at Kelly's. They chatted until she saw the headlines and found out that Jason and Brenda had crashed. Nik agreed to take her somewhere; she was too upset to drive. E. The Quartermaines Edward was taking action, meanwhile, on his plan to take Michael. A judge friend of his gave him a court order for temporary custody. Edward said that it was for the baby's own good (though I don't believe for a minute that's his motivation), and this time, Monica agreed (I do believe that it's hers, but I was hacked off that she agreed so soon after the news came--and that she didn't talk to Bobbie). Emily, on the other hand, was upset that Edward wanted Jason dead, as she put it. She reminded him that Jason would be mighty angry *when* he got home. But even AJ agreed with Edward, and Emily was outvoted, so to speak. But she continued to argue, insisting that they were kidnapping Michael all over again. Monica tried to sweet talk her, assuring her that she (Emily) would be right down the hall from the baby and that Jason would like that. AJ added that it was only temporary--and I think he and Monica meant that, though Edward had his sites on the longer-term possibilities. Edward and Monica prepared to pick up the baby while Alan wandered through the room. Monica told him that people needed him to be strong despite his grief (pretty cold, but accurate) and left with Edward. Alan had to take a drink because his pill bottle was empty. F. Bobbie and Carly Carly: "He's the only person that ever stood by me...until you." Carly was surprised to see Bobbie again so soon after her transfer. Bobbie had come to tell her about Jason. She told her there was no crash site yet, but Carly was upset that this last shred of hope had seemingly been taken from her. Bobbie held her again, and I didn't think that this time they were awkwardly going to "take it back" the next day. Carly found her own warped brand of comfort in the fact that Brenda was out there too--that meant people would keep looking. She waxed sentimental about Jason, but then panicked about Michael. She was convinced that the Qs would make a move on him, and pleaded with Bobbie to stop them. Bobbie didn't believe it, and made a call to the penthouse to see that Michael was there and ok. Bobbie then told her that Michael could live with her; she wouldn't let the Qs cut Carly out of Michael's life. Besides, she said, Monica would never back Edward on that plan (oh, the fur was gonna fly). Carly over compensated, asking Bobbie if she'd let Carly appoint her Michael's guardian, but Bobbie didn't want to be precipitous. Carly knew Jason would approve, but she worried that Bobbie was having second thoughts. Bobbie assured her that she was not. She just wanted to keep the baby in a familiar setting until they knew more about Jason. Finally, Carly asked if Bobbie would return the next day. Bobbie said she definitely would. I love these two together (if I haven't mentioned it recently), and this scene was understated but lovely. G. Brenda and Jason The castaways had made it to shore in the night. Jason immediately popped into business mode and Brenda just as immediately started criticizing himself for being so cold about the pilot's death. They fought over their plan of action--she wanted to sit and wait for Jax and he wasn't sitting there when a highway could be a few miles off and the Qs were going after Michael. Likewise, they fought over a flare when he said it was just a passenger jet (how can he tell?) and the flares were wet. Finally she pointed a direction and he set out walking, with her protesting all the way. Later, over a possibly poison berry... Brenda: "Ooh, you tryin' to save my life?" Jason: "You're the only one who can read a map." And then they argued over the carrying of the bag until Brenda slipped off the edge of a cliff and Jason pulled her up. But she had hurt her hip. Lots of people complained about the fakeness of these scenes, but I was pleased with them. They were actually shot outdoors, rather than on a set, and they looked good! At this point, Jason was willing to try and light a flare for a search plane, but they were still too wet. Instead, he decided to carry her. H. The Quartermaines Justus tried to stop Edward from taking the child by tearing up the court order. Edward left, but Monica stayed to see Michael. She assured Justus that this was temporary, and that it was only for the child's sake while his parents were away (ya right--it's not selfish at all). She asked Laticia to come as well, and she and Justus had about come to an understanding. Robin came by to tell Michael where his father was (whatever), but Justus wanted her out of there before Edward came back. Edward did come back, bringing Taggert and Dara with him, and shattering any agreement Monica and Justus had come to. Justus's hackles were back up, and when he wouldn't budge, Dara nodded at Taggert, who put Justus under arrest (maybe Dara just has a prison bar fetish). The most appropriate moment came when the kid started crying as Laticia put him in Edward's arms. Ha! Meanwhile, Emily and AJ were choosing toys for Michael when Alan entered. He grew upset over Jason's old stuffed teddy bear, and called the pharmacy for more pills, again for a patient. Emily told AJ that she was worried about Alan's drinking and his anger, telling him not to say anything about it. Alan returned and Emily left. AJ told Alan that he had ceased to compare himself to Jason when Michael was born--he had stopped wondering if he was as good as his brother. But he still missed him. The deliveryman arrived, and Emily questioned Alan about the pills. Alan said he'd take them to the patient on the way to the hospital, and Emily praised him. Alan headed off to...all skate...take some pills. On Wednesday, he entire family hovered over Michael until AJ suggested that they give the kid some air. Edward, meanwhile, was just walking around looking smug. And at the institution, Bobbie was visiting Carly. She had brought her a stack of magazines. Good thing too, since Carly had been playing checkers with some whacked man to pass her time. But what Carly really wanted was to hear Michael's voice. At that point, Ned arrived to tell them about the Qs custody of Michael. Carly flipped, but Bobbie headed straight for the Qs. You go, girl. She found the Qs discussing where to put the nursery and Emily reminding them that this was temporary. AJ had even gotten into the act, and even Emily softened when she saw him hold Michael for the first time. But Bobbie was ready to rumble, and cruised in to inform them that she didn't appreciate them making decisions about her grandchild without her input. They assumed Justus told her, and she let them. Monica had Emily take the baby out of the room. Bobbie then launched into it again, demanding her daughter's rights. She informed them that she could have taken Michael just as easily, and Monica laid out all the reasons that Bobbie's house wouldn't be an appropriate place for Michael: she was a single mom, etc. Oooo, that chapped my hide. Bobbie's too; she stormed out and left Monica looking concerned for a change. Yee-haw. Bobbie went back to Carly to give her an update and to tell her that she would fight for Michael as long as Carly was unable to fight for herself. Meanwhile, the Qs hovered over the baby even more than they worried about Jason, while Edward called a judge to see if he could get Carly put away for a long long time. I. The Search Felicia: "My hero." Mac: "Ya, well." Felicia: "You are, you know. My hero." Mac: "How d'ya figure that? I thought your hero was the guy you married. ...Forget I said that." Felicia: "Ya, well, he was fine and he was great. But the guy who comes back every time is the guy who gets to keep the title." On Thursday, we went back to Jax and the search for Brenda. Mac called in favors to get Jax and Jerry a military helicopter with night vision so they could continue looking. Jax was worried about the weather and the time that was passing. Felicia tried to comfort them all, and Jax told her that he wouldn't play games once Brenda was back. He would tell her that he loved her. Robin, who overheard, told Felicia the same thing. She was tired of living in fear, and would not throw away the chance to be with Jason again. Good for her. I'm tired of her having such a placid demeanor, and I want to see some passion in her again. Felicia went into give Mac a backrub, and we had the sweetest scene between them. J. Brenda and Jason Brenda sat against a rock (we were now back to sets, rather than location shots) and waited for Jason, who was looking for water. He brought berries instead, but wasn't sure they were ok. She said that she'd take them, because if he got sick again he couldn't look for water. They timed her sickness based on his--apparently he tried the last ones. After 45 minutes, she said that the berries must be ok. He noted that was great, since they were all gone. She hadn't realized that they were so hard to get, and asked why he let her eat them all. He said that she needed them. They argued over attitude and agreed that Brenda would be optimistic while Jason could be pessimistic--realistic, he insisted. It looked like rain, but as Jason took of his shoe, Brenda nixed that idea. They fought over Jax and the search, and then Jason told her to talk so they can stay awake--he carried her, she kept him awake. They talked about Michael and the travel books Jason read to him. He was prepared for her to mock, but she really didn't. She talked about her childhood as well. Another plane; another fight. In a great sequence, Brenda told Jason that Michael should know a fairy tale, and proceeded to teach him one. She started with Cinderella; he asked about the glass shoes and the pumpkin. Later, as they stood and drank rain out of their hands, she tried Rapunzel; he asked how she washed her hair. Brenda gave up. On Friday, then, it was night. They had stopped, and were trying to stay awake. Brenda was still talking about fairy tales and the like, and Jason didn't understand why kids needed to know about things like magic and pretend. She told him that Michael was magic...and so was love. She started to reminisce about their prom date; Jason was amazed to think that they had almost had sex. Brenda told him that they were friends back then--he had even warned her about Sonny. She knew Jason started to hate her when she wore that wire. She told him that she wouldn't have sent Sonny to jail. She just wanted him to tell the truth and didn't know whom to trust--he had been lying to her for over a year. She had gone to the police for information, and they had talked her into wearing the wire. If she didn't, somebody else would. She thought that she could protect him (I don't understand her logic, but there it is--did she think she could then keep the tape from the police or what?). He had caused her not to trust him; she in turn had ruined his trust in him. Jason assured her that Sonny had still loved her. Jason was the one who'd condemned her. But Brenda wasn't talking about love. She was talking about trust. Jason thought that it was like his time with the Qs--they had lied to him and he hated it. But Sonny told him the truth. Brenda warned him about the organization, and blamed Sonny for getting him into it. Jason insisted that it had been his own choice. Was it worth it, she asked, to be in a world into which he can't take Robin? Jason finally understood how Robin felt--afraid--because of Michael's kidnapping. He didn't want to feel like that again, and didn't want to make Robin feel that way either. It was as if a light had dawned, because Brenda said, "You do love her." Jason assured her that he would love her forever. Brenda said that there were times when somebody comes into your life and makes you better than you ver knew you could be. She spoke of Jax. At the end of the episode, she worried about Jason's strength and told him to leave her behind and get help. K. Alan and Emily On Friday, Alan turned off the baby monitor and gazed down at Michael. He took a pill with some alcohol out of a flask, and picked up the child to talk to him about Jason, pre-accident. Emily entered, startled because the baby monitor was off. Alan rambled on in this zoned-but-happy voice about watching Michael grow up, and Emily grew even more nervous. In an amazing progression and a fantastic performance from Stuart Damon and Amber Tamblyn, Alan continued to ramble. Emily asked what was wrong, and headed to get Monica. He first tried to defend himself, but when he went to pick up Michael again, who Em had laid down to change, she stood between them. He grew irate in a snap and attacked Emily. He was angry that she thought she had to protect Michael from him; he was angry that she thought he would hit her. Emily began to cry, and that made him angrier. Afterwards, Alan went to the park to meet the drug dealer. He took the entire bottle with some more liquor and passed out on the park bench. Emily, meanwhile, picked up Michael and left the house. Happy mother's day! L. The Jacks Brothers In the helicopter, Jax told Jerry the story of Brenda. It was a nice retelling, actually, and I was surprised how much I liked hearing it again. The montage of scenes from the past I could have done without, but it wasn't too long. Jerry told him that they should give up, but Jax refused to believe she was dead. III. The Cassadines A. Stefan and Katherine On Wednesday, Stefan asked Nikolas why he had been out so late the night before; he said that he was with Robin because she was upset about the crash. He wanted to know if Stefan had anything to do with it because of Jason. Ha! Stefan said he had better things to do, and when Kat can downstairs, they announced their engagement. Nikolas said he was happy. Later, they talked more about arrangements (see their previous discussion above with Luke and Alexis), and he showed her the ring (wait, didn't he give that to her already?). She held out her hand and he told her she could have it at the ball. B. Alexis Alexis got home after chatting with Luke and Ned arrived. She was cautious, supposing that he was there to rant at her again, but he said that he had a job for her. He told her that he wanted her to represent Carly. She said that she wasn't that good, and besides, there would be conflicts of interest all over the place. But he told her that Carly would need somebody good, and might need her again in the ensuing custody battle. But he warned her that this wouldn't change their relationship. However, I thought that he was giving her a chance to build up his trust of her--or that, despite himself, he might begin to trust her again. I think she hoped so too. IV. Justus and Dara On Wednesday, Justus was in jail for standing in the way of Edward's court order. Dara came to see him, wanting to know why he was refusing bail. He told her he wanted to see her but didn't want it to look fishy. I was struck with the comparison of this scene and the one where Dara came to visit Taggert. Justus asked her into the cell with him as well, but she refused. When she returned later, she gave him the complete run down on her career and told her that she would not ruin all of that for a man. In addition, she had heard that Justus was going to take over the business if Jason didn't come back. He told her that was ridiculous. I wondered what would happen to Justus if Jason died (though I knew he wouldn't). Would the new people have taken him out? Believe he was only in on the legit stuff?
